    Building 10/22s like AR 15s?

Is building a precision 10/22 as easy as assembling an AR? I see 10/22 receivers, barrels, and other parts everywhere. I thought it would be a neat project to start, but then I wondered if it needs to be assembled by a knowledgeable gunsmith.

I have built several myself and it is pretty easy. Most all the parts out there are "bolt on". The barrels, for example, are slip fit with 2 bolts holding a "clamp". Triggers can be had complete or as parts. The bolt is probably the hardest thing to get out of the receiver and back in but is easy enough after seeing it done on YouTube. They are fun projects and there are tons of options. I say dive in and have fun.

I would have saved a lot of money if I bought a TCR22 right off the bat...

Very easy. I put a Kidd barrel on mine. It's the aluminum barrel with the stainless steel liner. Light weight and super accurate. I throw a red dot on it and shoot steel matches or out a scope on it to shoot squirrels.

                      Isn't more like assemble?

Too bad Ruger doesn't make a really good 10/22 out of the box.

you may have as much fun with a 10/22

as you want your bank account to allow...

all I did with this early 70's was add tech sights and mason flash hider/brake

Just like an AR, it's easy until you hit a problem.
It's common for 10/22 barrels not to fit into receivers by hand.
This is not a problem if you have a means to heat the reciever up and work with it quickly while it's hot.
That troubles some people enough that they go see a gunsmith.
I have done lots of 10/22 and AR assembly because of little problems like that.

Then sometimes people want actual machining work like drilling a hole in the reciever for a cleaning rod or cutting the slot and drilling and reverse countersinking the hole to mound a Kidd lug to the back of the action.
These are beyond what you can do on your kitchen table with screwdrivers and punches.

I decided not to go down that rabbit hole. I just bought a Thompson TCR 22 instead.
