How do the savage or Mossberg .22lr semi-autos compare to Ruger 10/22?

That may be true, but one must consider the price points for these rifles. A 10/22 is selling for $225+ now-a-days, where as a Savage or a Mossberg can be had for under $130. Just yesterday at my local dealer I started DROS on a scoped Moss 702 for $125. I pick it up in just 9 more looooooooong days (along with the Charles Daly 20g I put on the same DROS) and I can do some comparisons with my 10/22. My brother just picked up his Marlin 795 and his Russian bolt .22, and has a 10/22 still in DROS, so we'll be able to do a bunch of comparing. Heck, I may have to buy a Savage just to throw it in the mix.

if you think that maybe in the future...possibly... you would want to modify it, then buy the 10-22. There are numerous aftermarket parts for it. If you're just planning on using as is, then pick one with the best track record. My non 10-22 vote goes to Marlin

I have to agree. 10-22's are excellent platforms for tricking out. They are also Ruger reliable which is always a plus, but not nearly so much in a plinker as in a defensive piece. One of my projects in waiting is giving a 10-22 the full on treatment but it has to be recognized that doing that will cost three or four times what the gun is worth as it comes from the factory. If you are into it, then it's great. If you aren't then you have a knockaround good shooter that will give you acceptable accuracy.

A Marlin, a Savage or a Mossberg for that matter, will usually be a better shooter straight out of the box at half or so of the price. It's one of the reasons why I bought a Marlin 60, tube magazine and all.

Like others have said, the 10/22 is great if you're going to modify it.

My first rifle was a Mossberg 702 and I love it as much as my 10/22, if not more. It's never had a problem firing or feeding anything I've shot through it and it has had great accuracy out of the box.

Just FYI, after some fairly extensive internet perusing, a bad review of the Mossberg 702 is a rare occurance indeed. Seem to be excellent rifles for under $150 most sellers.

But, if its "modding" you're after, stick with the 10/22.

I agree. If you want to change a bunch of stuff then get the 10/22. If you know for sure you what to just keep the stock rifle then I would get the mossberg because it almost $100 cheaper.
