But at least with AR platform, the rifle can't cycle rds without the buffer spring which is housed in the stock. So there is that argument.

It's easy to find a problem with idiotic contradictory gun laws...

For me it's just an amusing observation that when the action, which is still capable of firing is out of the stock, it's an SBR (and the 10/22 isn't the only gun where than applies). Yeah, it's silly, and terribly impractical to do that, but in a crazy anti-gun world, best to be aware that the "common sense gun laws" we hear so much about may not be quite so "sensible" in certain scenarios... Might be good to know you don't want to take your 10/22 apart out in "public" view, but do any cleaning or maintenance in the privacy of your own domain!

How many times have you heard the new drum beat against "all semi-auto" or "weapons of war".... you'd be surprised how far those seemingly "sensible" terms can be stretched to make virtually any firearm illegal...

Lose the gun oil for lubrication and start using Hornady One Shot, cleans and leaves dry film lube behind. It stays way cleaner, just keep that chamber and bolt face clean.

I was cleaning my 10/22 last night and this question came up. When you removed the stock, the rifle measures 22" which became a SBR. Wouldn't this make you a felon each time you clean your rifle? I don't see how one can remove either the trigger or barrel before removing the stock. Did I miss something?

An SBR has to have a stock on it.
Without a stock, the gun changes from a rifle to a title 1 firearm.
A title 1 firearm has no stock.

True for Federal laws/regulations.
However under CA laws/regulations, if the overall length is less than 26", then it is considered a SBR/SBS. [PC 17170(c) & 17180(c)]

Under CA SBR laws; a weapon, with a less than 16" barrel length or a less than 26" overall length, that is made from a rifle is a SBR.
^If they used "rifle" instead of "weapon", then a shoulder stock would be required. Since they used "weapon", a shoulder stock is not required.
