Ruger 10/22 became SBR when cleaning?

I was cleaning my 10/22 last night and this question came up. When you removed the stock, the rifle measures 22" which became a SBR. Wouldn't this make you a felon each time you clean your rifle? I don't see how one can remove either the trigger or barrel before removing the stock. Did I miss something?

I normally don't cut down my barrel below 16" when I am cleaning rifles, but who am I to judge?

i too have pondered about the order of legal assembly of the ar-7 if you instal the barrel first then the stock you have assembled from a rifle a firearm less than 26 inches oal

SBR charge for a stockless 10/22.

Oh yeah, that explain why on the shooting range they display the sign "DO NOT CLEAN YOUR GUN ON THIS TABLE"

The SIG522 has a adjustable and foldable stock... that one gets pretty close folded @ 26.1" IIRC... and unlike something like a Kel SU-16CA, the SIG can be FIRED while folded. But who cares, it is a rimfire. If that flash hider came off it'd be a rule breaker. Must be why they weld it all the way around.

The most incredible part of this thread is that sombebody was actually cleaning a 10/22.

I think you have to clean them... they get pretty gunked up, at least mine did with CLP sludge. Not like a P22 or something where it stops functioning after 100 rounds... but 1000's makes some cake in the bolt.

But at least with AR platform, the rifle can't cycle rds without the buffer spring which is housed in the stock. So there is that argument.

What I am referring to is the overall length of 26" required by California law.

Believe or not, 10/22 gets dirty pretty quickly and it affects accuracy.

Lose the gun oil for lubrication and start using Hornady One Shot, cleans and leaves dry film lube behind. It stays way cleaner, just keep that chamber and bolt face clean.

I laugh about this every time I work on a 10/22 (got a few of 'em)... "felon, not a felon, felon, not a felon..." It's a shining example of how goofy some "common sense gun laws" are.

Since the action can still be fired with it outside a stock, it technically runs afoul of the SBR 26" OAL rule... I guess ya just have to be "discreet" when cleaning!

Now if you really want to drive yourself nuts about gun laws, consider putting on a short barrel and stockless configuration (AKA Charger), and now you've really opened up a can of worms!

When you hear someone aggressively opposed to "common sense gun laws", it's these sorts of absurd "side effects" that raise legitimate concerns.

I know, usually they leave the rimfire "pew-pew" alone, but there was at least one "mass shooting" with a 10/22, so nothing is outside of the gun grabbers sights.

Note to self: when cleaning 10/22, do not illegally park my motorhome in front of police station while wearing knucks... while in Fresno.
