I have a Centerpoint 3-9x 50mm on my 10/22. It's nice and does the job for now. I'm debating whether or not to upgrade to the 6-24x one...

Mueller APV's are pretty popular over at rimfirecentral.com. I have one myself and it's got a lot of bang for the buck. 4.5x-14x magnification and adjustable objective for ~$115.00.

I recently bought a "Nikon Prostaff Classic Rimfire Rifle Scope 4x 32mm"

It's my first scope I've owned (shot scoped rifles before), and I'm very happy with the purchase.

I too but a centerpoint on my .22.. your kids will love it and so will your wallet.. 65 bucks from wallmart... bass pro has a BSA scope that is comperable... the reticles light up also...very "tacticool"... save the expensive optics for later... when you are ready to upgrade put the low dollar glass on an air rifle...

I'm using the Simmons 3-9x and it's working well under 100 yds. It's also under $100. When I move out further, say 100+ yards then I'll have to get something stronger so I can see the hole in a target without a long hike.

For a kid the Simmons 22 mag scope is fantastic.

Better glass for the money is the Mueller line.

I bought a Tasco 3-9x 40. With rings, under $100. Don't know much about scopes, but used it for the first time yesterday and like it.

Bushnell has a scope advertised as a rimfire scope that I picked up for about 50 bucks that is 3-9 that came with rings as well.
