Clear coat over bare metal for 10/22?

Anybody ever try sanding a blued 10/22 barrel and receiver to the bare metal and spray painting it with clear coat to make it look like stainless steel?

Is this a good idea?

clear coat does not stick to metal very well. the rattle can clear that you buy at auto parts stores is not the same as they use to paint cars. even the clear used on cars will not stick to metal very well. the best thing to do is have it powder coated clear. it will be a lot more durable.

I stripped the paint off my grey crinkle finish 10/22. It had machining marks but it was pretty easy to remove them. there are protective finishes you can put on aluminum but aren't permanent.

Thanks for your help, guys. I'm even thinking about leaving it bare metal and using some kind of wax/polish to protect it? Not sure if that would work though...

aluminum is pretty darn stable in the raw and the naked aluminum looks way more stainless than the silver goop ruger uses

Aluminum will eventually oxidize so its best to protect it with something otherwise it will loose its shine.

well i know the tops of soda cans arent coated with anything and they stay shiny pretty long

I polished my ruger and it is starting to loose it shine and its only been a few months.
Are you sure they don't have anything? anyway they aren't as shinny as I want my receiver imo.
If you don't want to you don't have to protect it just buff it whenever it looses its shine.

Think I might go with clear Duracoat... hopefully that will work on bare metal......

i actually have a custom 1022 with a walther match barrel in the white coated with a clear coating which i got at home depot, this was done about 8 or 9 yrs ago and it is still holding out ok.
the challenge is to apply the coatings evenly to make it look professional.
i am still happy with it. it also has a customized purple stock painted by a Harley bike painter. all work done by CCW except the barrel finish which i did myself. good luck.

the best thing to do is have it powder coated clear. it will be a lot more durable.

SILVER PAINT MIGHT BE THE ANSWER

Take it and get it clear anodized. Clear powder is thick and may interfere with tolerances.

can get it clear coated. theres a brand that has adhesion promoter for bare metal. ill look for you.

i did this for a buddy, i polished his frame on his street bike and cleared. its held up quite well. if you dont clear, youll have to polish it monthly to keep shine. mothers aluminium polish works great.

PPG has a clear that can be applied over bare metal even if its polished. YOu first need to use a metal prep though. Both products I have used are from the PPG line. The Metal prep is applied and kept wet until it is rinsed off. It has a color to it but will not leave any color behind. (you will have to get the tech sheet on proper application) Then clear right over it. I think the clear is DAU 97.
Another alternative is HOK metel effect. Its not expensive and as long as you are comfortable with your gun controle it is simple if unorthadox to apply. YOU first lay down some black base and then clear the piece. Once it's dry, you color sand away all orange-peel and polish to perfection. After that you spray the metal effect and re-clear. I don't know how it can bond to polished clear but have read good reviews about it.
