Recently bought a basic Camper from Sportsmans Outdoor Superstore for $260. Have shot about 300 rounds of mostly Federal Champion Bulk Pack 36gr CPHP's and some CCI Mini Mag 40gr CPRN. It may be that it's still breaking in and that the Federal is cheap but it rarely has fed a full mag of it without FTE's, stovepipes, etc. The 50 rounds of CCI fed and functioned 100% so I'm inclined to lay blame on the Federal. Trigger pull is a bit heavy at around 5lbs.

    Before - uglyish stock grips

After - Cocobolo grips from Midwest Gun Works - Tactical Solutions Picatinny Rail with Adjustable Rear Sight - Burris Fastfire 3 - TruGlo Fiber Optic Front Sight.

My Camper is a nail driver out of the box and an awesome teaching tool for new shooters as well. It really doesn't want to be cycled too quickly, but I have found no other flaws.

I think the P22 looks kinda neat, and I've put a few round through one and it was fun, but I'd put it in the "maybe a fun toy if it pops up cheap".

If you like accuracy and reliability, then Browning Buck Mark.

If you like ease of cleaning, then Walther P22.

Besides the Buckmark being a much higher quality and functioning gun. They really are apples and oranges besides both being 22 LR. The Buckmark is more of a real target shooting gun that will give you very good to great accuracy out of the box with sights, grip and trigger all geared to that. While the Walther is more of a plinker with everything geared to that.

The Buckmark is first in it's class for reliability and accuracy. A lot of semi autos really struggle to function reliably, and of the several I've owned, most of them required +P ammo to cycle properly.

The Buckmark is the exception. You won't find anything better in it's price range, and would have to step up in price considerably to get something "better." When I say better, I'm talking competitive shooting accuracy.

I'm not including revolvers and single shots in my comparison, only semi autos.

rimfire central dot com is a must for any .22 fan out there, in my opinion.

As to your question, without knowing anything more than that you want a .22 handgun, I'd say Buckmark.

If you want something to 'mimic' a carry handgun, then I might give a nod to the Walther.

If you want a reliable handgun that will provide more than adequate accuracy [not quite olympic level accuracy, but pretty darned good!], and that takes little to make it work VERY well- the Buckmark seems to hit all the marks.

In all openness- I have a buckmark [and MK II, and, and, and...], but I have never shot a Walther P22.
Where did all the range-time go?

Was watching my friend shoot his P22 and calling out his hits. I was wondering why his hits were all over the paper in random places from his point of aim. Walked up to the paper target and discovered that half the bullets were tumbling.

Found this in a search: "I have called Walther twice, and both times they blame the use of LEAD ammo. The guy said the lead build up does cause the rounds to ricochet off the barrel walls on exit, and they tumble on exit. They say the solution is using copper plated ammo. I told the guy I think the barrel is out of spec, but he says not its the soft lead ammo."

You could easily try different ammo. Seems hard to find LEAD RN ammo these days IMHO. I used to shoot lots of FED Lightning and no issues for an MKII.

Another thing you could easily try in the barrel is that thing called... whatchamacallit... uh... CLEANING.

                          Good choice!

Go to rimfire central dot com and read up on all you can, if you want to know more.

I like my buckmark, but it comes from the last millenium.

Excellent choice on the Buckmark. Now make sure you get a couple bricks and a McFadden Ultimate Cliploader.

Buckmark all the way. The P22 has the worst trigger known to man or at least close to it. Don't have any reliability issues with ours but the Buckmark isn't known for reliability issues and has a great trigger for a stock trigger.
Also no aftermarket P22 triggers available or really much of anything aftermarket

Edit: just saw the update, good choice

If you want a .22lr handgun that just works right out of the box, I would get a Buckmark. If it lacks anything you want, there are a lot of upgrade options.
