I don't think you can go wrong with a 10/22. They go on sale for right around $200 all the time. I see used 10/22's for under $200 often.

If you're looking for a bolt-action, there are plenty of good choices available. I like the Romanian Model 1969 trainers. They are extemely accurate and use 5-round magazines, although they don't always feed that well. It's sort of hit and miss. I bought one from Big 5 a while back for $69.

For a pistol, the Smith and Wesson 22A is a pretty good gun for the money. I've got one that I use as a loaner when somebody wants to go shooting. New they are over $200, but used ones can be found at pretty good prices. I got mine in the box with all the paperwork and 3 extra magazines for $135.

I got mine on sale at Big 5 for around $140 two years ago. They're not nearly as customizable as a 10/22 but they're cheap, reliable, and accurate.

Ciener kit for your AR

Get a Ciener 22LR (or Spikes, or CMMG) conversion kit for your AR. Once you have one, you will shoot the hell out of it.

The 22 kits are great, give you tons of practice on your AR platform. You can shoot all day with a $15 brick of ammo.

I have a Spikes conversion kit ($200) and it is outstanding. With a 1/9 twist barrel you will get about 2 inch accuracy at 50 yards, which is pretty reasonable for fun shooting.

If you want something more accurate, consider an older American bolt action gun with target sights. Something like a Mossberg M42 or M44 or a Remington 513 would be perfect. They are superbly made guns, and very accurate.

Either way you can't go wrong.

If you want something inexpensive you can spend money on to upgrade later, the 10/22 can't be beat. If you want removable mags, it's also the best choice.

If you want something more accurate out of the box for less money, the Marlin 60 is the way to go. The 14 round tube mag (18 round on older guns, I believe) is easy to load, but slower than using mags.

I've got 2 Marlin 60s that cost less combined than my 10/22, and out-shoot it, but there's not a lot of upgrades for them.

You can't go wrong with either one, or both!

I recommend the Marlin 39A. You can get them from $250 used to $500 new. They will feed and shoot everything short of .22 magnum. Not only will it feed and shoot them but you can mix and match them in the same tube load. It is accurate and easy to maintain. Finally, it looks cool and feels great in your hands.

I'd have to say the marlin 60 is by far the best solution. Look around at local pawn shops for a deal. They are fun and accurate plinkers and my friends that have 10/22's all enjoy my marlin better!

Go to a local gun store and look at their used .22 rifles. Marlin 60 is a good choice as is the Remington 552. The 60 (I got the 70SS Papoose; same action, take-down features) will go on forever with reasonable care. The 552 has the added bonus of shooting shorts or LRs. Also has the charging handle on the left side. For a righty, you fill the tube with ammo, clip the rod in place and as you are turning the rifle over, slide the operating rod back with your left hand. If you are coordinated (or with some practice), the rifle is loaded and ready as you turn the gun upright. Here's some pics:

I recently looked around to pickup another 10/22 and was shocked by the price! Why are these inexpensive little 22's going for 200+ nowadays? Nothing has changed on them over the years. I bought my first one for $69.95 a while back. In fact, it wasn't that long ago you could buy any number of 22 semi-autos for under $100. Just ridiculous.
