Took her dancing - Range report on upgraded 10/22

So yesterday I was able to get to the range to run some ammo through my newly upgraded 10/22.

Just to give you a quick refresher on what I did to my 10/22 - she got a new Green Mountain 20" bull barrel, Ruger BX Trigger, Archangel Precision Stock, Pride Fowler 3-12X42 FFP Scope and a cheap bi-pod.

Well depending on the ammo I was using she ran great. She really didn't like the Aguila Super Extra HV.

I don't have a spotting scope so I had to do a lot of walking out to the target to see how I was doing. I've also never shot with a scope so it was a learning experience for me.

I'm close to having her all dialed in but I definitely need more work with using a scope.

This is my last target for the day. The bottom left target is my last one. That was shot with CCI 36gr HP's. All my shooting was done at 50 yards. As I get more comfortable with shooting through a scope I plan on going out to about 125 yards with her.

    Thanx for the update!
Keep trying different brands of ammo until you find out what the gun likes.
The right ammo can make a huge difference, and it does not have to be "match" ammo either.

You can count on that. I have several different brands at home to work with. As for the match ammo this gun will probably never see any. I'm too cheap to buy it.

I wouldn't feed an upgraded 10/22 anything other than standard velocity ammo. With that being said CCI SV has been the best bang for the buck for me with very good and consistent accuracy.

I have some of that too. I just didn't get around to shooting it. I got hungry and had to leave the range.

Your accuracy will probably suffer without better ammo. There is a reason some ammo costs more than others. You will occasionally get a really good group with average ammo but for consistently good groups you will have to “bite the bullet” and get better ammo than CCI. Another thing that may help is going to a two piece rest instead of the bipod, if you are after tight groups.

Ohh, I completely understand that. I'm just too cheap to spend the money on the target ammo. I'm not entering any competitions or anything like that. Just out having some fun.

I would never use a two piece rest or any kind of shooting vise. IMHO that's not shooting. I know that's how people get dime sized groups but that's just not my bag.

Quick question. Why would you spend all the money for a barrel, trigger, and stock, and the other goodies if you aren’t trying to get dime sized groups.
Because it looks cool and it made me happy.

To be fair, I do use a shooting sled to zero on. Then when I'm not using it, I know it's me.

Thanks for the update OP. As other have said I have had good luck with CCI standard velocity. How do you like the BX trigger?

I have a lot of CCI standard velocity ammo in my ammo box and will get used in this rifle.

As for the BX Trigger I like it. Mine feels like it breaks at about 3.5lbs. I've never shot a 10/22 with one of those super fancy single stage triggers so I can only compare it to the stock triggers. It is a really big improvement over the stock trigger.

Though I have to tell you that since I bought my BX Trigger I've found out that there's a company that will work your factory trigger for about $30 plus shipping. Now I had a free $50 GC to Cabela's and got cash back through AJ and my Cabela's Visa card. So my net cost for the trigger was about $24. Knowing about that other company now if I didn't have that GC I would probably go that route instead of with the BX Trigger.

My whole goal with this upgrade was classified as a budget build. I didn't buy a lot of stuff that a lot of people were recommending. I kept it to what I thought would be the basic upgrades to give me a better shooting rifle.

The one item that is worth way more than what I paid for it is the scope. I work for the company that imported it for the company who designed it. I'm not sure how we had them but the boss sold it to me for a hell of a price.

Don't know much about the stock, but is barrel free floated? I've floated a few of mine, small pressure pad about 2" from muzzle end. Start experimenting with torque# on action screw, 18-20# is a good place to start with CCI MMHP, you can get great groups with that ammo, just start experimenting. Easy stuff. Tape bedding, floating, pressure pads. BTW, if you can't see your bullet holes at 50yd with that scope, either it's not set for proper eye relief, out of focus, etc, doesn't sound right.

Why can't you see bullet impacts at 50yds with a 12x scope??
