    .17 HMR ammo

    Hello Guys,

Been away from here for a while. I'm now interested in getting a rimfire rifle in this caliber. Before I invest in a new gun, please let me know the best way to get this ammo here in CA. I do see it stocked at my local Walmart in 200 round boxes, and that's it for now. Yes, I do have a CA safety cert.

you might find more choices or better prices online at places that will ship to california, like https://www.targetsportsusa.com

but as of this year, they must ship it to an FFL and you can pick it up there.
you just need to find a place nearby that takes online ammo shipments (usually for a small fee).

I bought three 50 round boxes at Big5 earlier this year. It happened to be on sale (still higher than many other stores) and I had a $10 off $30 coupon that was good for ammo. Good luck on your hunt. 3 boxes of 50 for about $24 out the door. Take it when you find it.

That's a good start. I'll talk to a local dealer for this. Thank you.

Nice score. I have to hang out at Big5 more often.

If you're stocking up, be mindful that lead free projectiles are required for taking game (including varmints) starting next year

Roger that. Do you think the manufacturers will resolve this issue with any new products for the rim fire market?

Got a couple of boxes of this to try, haven't shot it yet but the reviews say it's accurate.

No more big 5 10 bucks off 30 for ammo. They got wise to that in January.

I see TNT Green by CCI regularly at Wal Mart.

I never have a problem finding 17 hmr. Every local gun store, every Walmart, Big 5, Bass pro, all have it sitting on the shelf in stock.

96 ft lbs @ 100 yards. I'm OK with that.

Like many guns, some can be picky on the ammo. I've found that the .17 HMR's I've had prefer one over another in terms of accuracy. My suggestion would be to try and pick up a variety of ammo and try them in the gun you pick up before trying to make arrangements to buy it in bulk.

Like others have said, Bass Pro, Big 5, Wal Mart, and Sportsman's Warehouse will usually have it in stock, along with other places. Lead-free options will be minimal though so if you require this, hopefully you'll have good luck with what you find.

BTW - Have you narrowed down your options on the rifle? There are lots of CZ followers here for an 'out of the box' accurate rifle.

The TNT Green lead-free shoots well in almost all of my friends' rifles. Hornady also makes a non-lead load that is a 15.5 gr bullet, I think. My CZ shoots the TNT Green very well - about 3/4 inch or less at 100 yards if I do my part. I don't recall specifics, l but I don't recall the Hornady lead free load doing as well. Each rifle is a law unto itself, though. My CS hates 17 gr bullets of all brands but loves the 20 gr Hornady and the CCI TNT Green.

Watch the Big 5 sales ads - sometimes they have good prices on the .17 ammo. As others have said, it is usually at any shop selling ammo.
