Who has participated in competitive smallbore shooting?

I am interested in knowing how many of you have been involved in competitive smallbore shooting. Not everyone may know what I am asking, so I am referring to shooting in prone or 3P matches with a .22 LR target rifle, such as an Anschutz or a Winchester 52. I am not referring to shooting modified 10-22s.

I got my start shooting .22s when I young, but when I entered high school I joined a shooting league, and I began learning and practicing on Wednesday nights, at an indoor 50 foot range, then I transitioned into competing.

I thought I was a good shot because I could consistently hit objects we would shoot at when my friends and I went plinking with our .22s. In smallbore shooting, I practiced the fundamentals of how to shoot accurately, and experimented on how each fundamental affected the impact of the bullet.

This has turned into a lifetime hobby. I have not been in a competition since 2003. I stopped competing to spend time with my daughter, and now she is in high school and she is very independent, and I am going to take up my hobby again.

          Borrring. Try smallbore silhouette.
It cannot be inherited, nor can it ever be purchased.
You and no one alive can buy it for any price. It is impossible to rent and cannot be lent.
You alone and our own have earned it with...Your sweat, blood and lives. You own it forever.

I am getting that message, loud and clear. I enjoy smallbore and realize it has never drawn crowds. When I posted this, I was thinking maybe there are a couple of smallbore competitors on this site that we have met in past competitions. Guess not.

I shoot mini-palma and a bench/prone competition every month and I've shot at one formal smallbore prone shoot but that was with an f-class setup. Still looking for more f-class smallbore shoots. I have a shoulder that doesn't allow sling shooting.

I'm on the other coast. I got on here for info on 'featureless' ARs because NY and Cali have similarly idiotic AWBs.

I participated in small bore and full bore competitions while at University (in Australia!) I did enjoy the single ragged hole one achieved with the .22

Never competed, but someday I'd like to.

Welcome back to the "hobby of a lifetime", RandyD.

I competed in Smallbore Metallic Silhouette with an Anschutz 64 rifle back in the day. (1980's and 1990's). Loved it.
When the local shooting range closed down, I switched to Trap, skeet and sporting clays with an eye towards getting back into smallbore competition when the opportunity presented itself.

                    Best regards,

There was a similar post about this a few weeks ago I replied to.
The Escondido Fish & Game range near Lake Wulford has a small bore match every 3rd Saturday of the month at 8am. 4 x 10 shot 4 position at 50 yards then prone only at 100 yards. Open to non-members, $10 fee. 12 shooting stations never fills up. Concrete pad with roof.
Go to web site for more info. Click Newsletters tab and open last month and scroll down to see match scores posted.
On the 2nd Sunday, the smallbore silhouette is off-hand only, no shooting coat, 4 distances: 40, 60, 77 snd 100 meters. Off hand is my weak point so I rarely go to this one.

                        ><

Shot many Light Rifle matches back in the day. 40 shots prone @ 50yds, rig weight less then 8 1/2lb with sights, no jackets, no bags.

Still have my Anschutz 54 Sporter

Better yet, get one of those modified 10/22s and try steel challenge.

To answer the OP's question I have shot small bore competitively in the past to include Cal state matches and the Apple Sauce match in Sebastapol and small bore Palma's in Modesto and Richmond. I currently shoot 3 P in a winter league. I can no longer shoot from prone or kneeling because of health issues. I shoot the kneeling portion from standing and I shoot the prone portion from sitting position. I also shoot small bore silhouette on occasion.

The last place where I was competing was LAR&R in El Monte. You may want to try that range. Its only about a 45 min drive from Costa Mesa. Here is a link, http://www.larrclub.org/ I am hoping to start competing again in a couple of months and I'll go back to LAR&R.
