    Help identifying this Colt Woodsman...

    Howdy,

Just picked up this Colt Woodsman for a song at an auction. I'm not familiar with the different sub-models/years of this pistol... can someone clue me in?
(need to make sure I buy the right magazines, as this one did not come with any)

    Serial # is 1136xx

This is the only photo I have until it gets out of jail. Thanks in advance!

A 1st and 3rd generation Woodsman, have a magazine release button on the bottom of the magazine well, and a 2nd generation has a magazine release button on the rear of the trigger guard. The grips on your Woodsman, cover both of these areas, so its difficult to determine your Woodsman's generation.

That is a first issue woodsman sport model. grips are non-factory. What did you pay for it at auction? GLWP. Dave gman@goldrush.com

P.S. Aftermarket magazines are available for the first issue woodsman.... factory original mag will probably cost you $100

I would say you got a good deal, at $350. I have a 2nd Generation Woodsman that belonged to my dad, who bought it in the mid 50's. Its the first firearm I fired. It is one of my favorite firearms. I would suggest creating and saving a search on ebay for magazines, they are getting hard to find and the prices are always going up. Once in a while I will find a bargain, and I snap it up.

Seems to be in pretty good shape. The mag release is at the bottom of the mag well... when she gets out of jail, I'll pull off the grips and post up more detailed pictures.

                    1937

1938 started with serial number 123000

In 1937 Colt made 16,000 Woodsman pistols.

If they ran 2 even batches a year this one would have been made during the first batch.

                    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.
