    Buying .22 ammo, sans rifle?

I have not owned a .22 rifle since the late 50's or early 60's. I still don't own one.

I have at present enough ammo for the long gun I have and the pistols.

For my last ammo purchase before years end, I think some .22 LR might be prudent. I know, cart before the horse, but in GENERAL what brand / grain /etc of .22 ammo shoots fairly reliably in the most popular rifles?

CCI, Ely, Federal or any of the brands.

(I know rifles can be finicky, and not all ammo is equal).

What .22 ammo would you buy sans rifle?

    Thank you
    Kyle

Without knowing what gun you're eventually be using it in, I'd go with SK Standard Plus. Most guns will shoot pretty well with it, and some will shoot great. CCI Standard Velocity is also a good choice. If you want high velocity, then CCI MiniMags are the benchmark and will cycle and perform decently in just about any gun. All of these are 40 grain, but if you get MiniMags in hollowpoint, they will be 38 grain.

The brown truck of happiness just dropped off my Cabelas Black Friday order of CCI Blazer .22’s - anything from CCI is good. For me, I tend to stick to one bullet weight regardless of brand, I figure if majority of my stuff is high velocity 40 grain, they can’t be that far off.

But to answer your question, you should ALWAYS have a stack of .22 (and shotgun shells).

Aguila, Federal, and CCI Blazer. Of course, purchase multiple cases of 5K; it has not been this cheap in many years. Before 2018, the internet is the BEST way to purchase everything but 12ga shotshells. Store it cool and dry, it will last a very long time.

Yeah, I have the shotgun shells but the shot gun (870) is no longer.

Uninformed question: Are mini-mags compatible with .22 LR rifles or does the rifle need to be magnum dedicated?

Sorry, but a long time away from small caliber.

I'm still have/using .32 rounds from 1962 for the old Iver Johnson snubbie revolver.

I wish I was in as good of condition as my ammo for the age.

            Thanks,
            Kyle

MiniMags are one of CCI's High Velocity 22LR. MaxiMags are one of CCI's 22 WMR rounds.

I'd go CCI, some 40gr Mini-Mags and some Standard Velocity LRN.

If you want to go less expensive do a case of these each:

CCI Blazer 22 Long Rifle Ammo 40 Grain Lead Round Nose at Target Sports USA with free shipping available. Enjoy deals on 22 Long Rifle ammo for sale.|^||^|

Buy bulk ammo for sale with free shipping at Target Sports USA. Enjoy great deals on cheap ammunition including 22lR ammo, 9mm & 5.56mm ammo.

                Another option:

Federal Small Game 22 Long Rifle Ammunition 40 Grain Copper Plated Lead Round Nose - 710 at Target Sports USA with free shipping available. Enjoy deal|^||^|

CCI and Winchester seem to work fine for me in my CZ455 and Browning Buckmark.

Thanks much to all for educating an old dog. It's genuinely appreciated.

If you want dead-nuts reliability at any price, the best I've found is Norma Tac-22. I keep some in my range bag for students who jam up with literally everything else. Don't use it otherwise since it's supersonic out of my rifles and I prefer subsonic for target reasons.

Second place would be CCI Mini-mag as noted above... significantly cheaper.

                        I go with CCI Minimags.

If you buy a manually operated rifle (like a lever gun) ammo quality doesn't matter. Everything will shoot.

My Buckmark never runs well on Winchester (The 300 pack bulk stuff)...
I traded all I had for an equal amount of Golden Bullets... which it likes.

But to answer the original question...
                            1. Hurry Up!
                            2. Buy A LOT
                            3. Anything from CCI is good. Blazer, Mini-mags, Velocitors, Stingers...

These two are my favorite. The standard velocity is relatively clean which is why we shoot it out of the Ruger Mk III, and the MiniMags shoots reliably in all the rest of our .22s, including this finicky Glock 19 conversion kit I have. I can run about 100 rounds through that before it needs to be cleaned.
