Smith & Wesson Model 41 vs High Standard Victor

I recently purchased a S&W M41 and HS Victor. Finally went to the range to try both guns side by side to compare how they shoot using CCI SV, Aguila SE SV, CCI Blazer and Federal Champion ammo. This was done indoors at around 15 yards.

I had to sight in each gun and used a carpeted wooden rest to remove a little of my human error. Didn't have a sand bag rest as that would probably be better. In any case, I sighted both with CCI SV since that's the ammo I heard that both guns really liked.

On the rest, I was able to get a group of around 3/4" with both guns using CCI SV with iron sights. The M41 did not really like any of the other ammo. The Victor was ok with the Aguila SV but didn't like the others either.

When it came to shooting freehand, I found it easier to shoot more accurately with the High Standard Victor even though the gun didn't feel as good in my hand. Might have to do with the sights. I haven't practiced with either gun before. If I had to choose one over the other, it would be the Victor. Its accuracy and ease of shooting better groups and not as ammo sensitive makes it a winner in my book. Only problem is finding magazines for it and learning to release the slide on the right side of the gun and magazine release on the bottom of the handle.

Now for function and reliability, both guns had some issues. Seems the CCI SV had several FTE on the M41. Might need to change to a slightly lighter recoil spring. On the Victor, after inserting the loaded magazine and hitting the slide release, it does not feed the first round unless I help push the slide a little. After that it cycles perfectly while shooting.

Does anyone with a High Standard know how to fix this small issue? Also where can I find a couple more magazines and maybe the barrel weights for the Victor?

    I'll post a picture later.

You regret getting the S&W 41?

No regrets. The S&W M41 is a great pistol that I will most likely add a red dot to as my aging eyes require better sights or optics.

New recoil spring on the victor may help.

My neighbor stopped by this morning and we got to talking about plinking...he mentioned that he can pick up a high standard victory with 5.5 inch barrel and asked what I thought about the gun??? My experience with this or any High Standard is zip, zilch, nada..none. My experience with the S& W...

Here are some comments from the S&W forum and there are actually more people who prefer the High Standard Victor. I guess my review was very similar. Now the hard part is to find magazines and parts for the High Standard.

Both are great guns. One advantage the 41 has is that it's still in production, so parts & service is available...And mags are EZ and cheap....that said,

Op, sounds like you had fun, I have a Burris fastfire III on my S&W 41 long slide and it does help the old eyes.
As far as your High standard mags good luck! very hard to find good ones.
You mentioned first bullet feed problems on HS, mag spring might be a bit strong since the rest feed ok once a little tension is relieved.

I've owned both---unfortunately, my Victor was made during one of High Standard's going out of business situations---QC went out the door---very sharp edges (cut your hands every time you handled the pistol-really)---many functioning problems---magazines super hard to find now---sold it…
The S&W Model 41 was superb in every way---had two barrels---5 1/2" heavy barrel and 5" "Field" barrel---really nice pistol! Just my 2 cents...

My Victor was made in Hamden and I read those were the ones to get. The bluing is still in excellent condition minus a few small scratches here and there. So easy for someone to put a gun down on an empty 22 LR brass case

I think I like thinner blade front sights for my older eyes.

I got a Model 41 39 years ago. Lots of rounds through it. I got a High Standard Supermatic Citation bull barrel 52 years ago. Lots of rounds through it. The HS is my favorite because it fits my hand better and has a better trigger. Accuracy is great for both but the HS may have a slight edge. I like the grip angle of the HS. That's my 40 year comparison. Yours may differ.

I understand the HS mags need to be tuned. Not sure that is your issue though. Just mentioning it.

I hope to one day own a Hamden Victor. Until then I'll enjoy my 41. Fortunately, and one of the primary reasons I kept mine, is because it feeds many types of different ammo. Accurate and a great trigger is a plus. I put a FF3 on it and I enjoy it even more now. Aging eyes I guess.

I have owned both, the 41 had issues feeding, when it ran it was great. Never was able to get it sorted. Still have a High Standard, magazines can be fussy, but if you have some that work they are reliable. There is a tool to adjust the mags. It will work with original magazines, the aftermarket ones ( triple K etc) do not work.
