Sounds more like you might be cross eye dominant than just having "old eyes".

My preference for pistols are iron sights or a reflex sight (I use a Vortex Venom on my 22 target pistol, and I like it, but there are a ton of choices.)
        +1 for the Vortex Venom!!!

Actually not. Occluded eye aiming is one of the main reasons red dot sights were first developed. You see best with both eyes open and your brain merges the images from both eyes so you see the dot on the target. It's pretty hard to do the same with iron sights, since you're focusing on the front sight (if done properly), rather than looking at the target with a dot superimposed on it.

Why not get a Vortex Viper or Venom? You might be able to co-witness irons; not 100% sure.

If you go with a bigger red dot, I'd probably get one with a mount that is hollow in the middle so you can still use irons.
