The Zastava made MP22. Very nice little rifles for the price. Diamonds in the rough.
Pros: All steel, excellent bluing, rifle sights, decent walnut stocks, fully adjustable trigger(I've gotten them down as low as 2 1/2#), fairly inexpensive.

Cons: Bolt handle a little small, stock is finished in "something" and I am not sure what, lack of repair support(though many parts are available)b.

      blkside,

I have a Model 9422M that I bought at Turners some 20 years ago. I believe I paid around $350 for it. No, it's not for sale. I bought it for zapping coyotes. The .22 Magnum will drop coyotes farther than most people would assume. But if I had to do over again, especially considering the price of .22 WMR ammo, I'd go with an Anschutz .222 Rem: http://www.anschutznorthamerica.com/centerfire.html

I could probably hand load a 100 .222 Rem rounds for 25% the price of a box of .22 WMR. And the .222 Rem is one of our most inherently accurate cartridges.

For truly packing might consider the Cricket. They are available in 22 wmr and are drilled and tapped for an optic. You can get a full-size stock or use the small one. For hiking this is a very lightweight option.

The CZ 512, they say is a wonderful .22 WMR automatic rifle. Comes in black rifle (short barrel), wood stock 20" barrel, or deluxe walnut stock (this last one does not include iron sights), also a fourth variation is a 'tactical' model (not sure if it is Cal legal).

All are accurate and reliable, check youtube videos.

The Remingtons and Rugers are not as good and the European auto 22WMR are way more expensive.

I almost bought one, but got a Henry lever 22 mag instead.

my 22wmr trunk/pack rifle is a ruger single six 5.5" revolver, loaded with an 8 shot after market 22wmr cylinder made by story. a 6.5" barrel would be better in this application but 5.5" is easier to wear on the hip.

Chiappa Lil' Badger and the Crickett are great, light packable guns - if you needed a repeating gun, that Ruger American .22 WMR in 'Youth' format would be tough to beat.
Edit: not youth, they call it compact.

                              I don't know about a pack rifle, but I re-iterate the CZ 455.

I bought the 22LR trainer because I like irons and long barrels. Then I bought the 22 WMR conversion with the short barrel.

It shoots 1 ragged hole groups at 25 yards with a leupold rimfire 2-7x, and holds about a minute, minute and a half at 100 with zero correction for 100 yards. I'm sure it could do a minute regularly if I did my part.

I have a companion firearm in a ruger bearcat, converted to 22WMR, and holds playing card accuracy at 25 yards.

This is all with lead free ammunition. I paid dearly for a case of 500 rounds.

They are my rabbit guns. Pick one. the pistol when you want light and 1-25 yard range, and the CZ when you want 25-100 yard range. In both cases, with zero correction dialed because it's WMR, not LR.

                              -----------------

As for cost, the CZ is what, $350 for a 22LR and easily sourced? retail on the WMR barrel is $115 or so at Midway, and retail on the scope is like $250 Brick and Mortar.

That puts you close to the $900 custom, in a way, but also lets you shoot 22LR and puts a quality scope on the gun you don't worry about as much when it's banging against the stuff in your pack. And you don't have to search for a deal to get these prices.

For deals, the scope is what, $100? barrel is like $75 on rimfire central, and whatever you can get for any old 455.

I actually paid more for the bearcat, though it is a Harton
