    The Venerable Nylon 66

I ran across this great article on the gun a lot of us old guys learned to shoot with. My late uncle had one of the wooden blocks used in the 72,500 round endurance marathon mentioned in the article.
    Still have mine.

Every Thursday we'll reprint an article from the American Rifleman archives. In this article from 2009, the authors provide the history of the first synthetic rifle scope. Called “The Rifle of Tomorrow” or a “Buck Rogers” rifle when first introduced, the Remington Nylon 66 .22 rifle was one of the most revolutionary and important guns of the 20th century.

I have a few of them. I used to more extensively collect them but I sold off some.

Mine was a jam-o-matic. Sold it decades ago.

I'm a huge fan of everything old, but I didn't dig the plastic then anymore than I dig the plastic now, ya dig?

I have my grandpa's 552 speedmaster for that niche in my collection..

        and shoots all size .22

if I had a family heirloom nylon 66 I'd keep it, but I'm not looking to add one to my collection..

neat gun, good article, not for me

It was my first rifle. I loved that thing. Shot lights out.

Unfortunately, it was stolen when I was in undergrad.

Had a Nylon 66 I bought brand new when I was young.
Mine was very reliable. (Blazer 22 ammo by the case!)

I gave it to my oldest boy.
One day I hope he passes it on to one of his kids.

Mine was inaccurate, way inaccurate. I gave it away decades ago.

                I have a 66, and a 76 lever action, both 1963 vintage. 2 of my favorite .22's

I've had one for 30 plus years, nice light little shooter. Accurate enough so it's fun to shoot but mine has never been the most reliable.
Strange thing is the price one in good condition will go for, mine is worth about twice it was when brand new??

My dad brought home two in about 1964. He bought them whoesale @ $50 each. They came with their own zipped sheath that said "Apache" stitched in small letters on the side. The years of abuse ripped up the sheath and I stupidly threw it out. I've never seen another sheath like it.
Anyways, I got one of the rifles and the other was lost by an irresponsible sibling. My 34 year old son learned to shoot with it, just as I did.

I collect .22 rifles so of course I own one. It is one of my most enjoyable rifles to shoot.

I just need to find one in "Apache Black" to round things out.

I got my black diamond at the Bakersfield gun show for $100, still had the round sticker on the buttstock.

You have to be careful if you take them apart, the damn things have some little springs inside that will break, then they start jamming. I had a mohawk brown that jammed up because the Cartridge Stop Spring broke.

Got mine for $49.95 at the Douglas Aircraft Company store in 1968. Still got it, still shoot'n fine. Never had a malfunction, other than a couple of "doubles" when I let it get overly dirty.

I have two of them. A black and brown one. Someday, hopefully I can find a green one.

Talk about a blast from the past. My father gave me one for Christmas along time ago and because of the nylon stock, my mother thought it was a toy gun. Little did she know the old man put one over on her. I still have it. Used to take it to go after jack rabbits all the time. The tubular magazine is wonky compared to a 10-22.
