ammo is not "picky", the guns are picky. Junk ammo is junk but may be well tolerated by some guns.

of the rounds you show, I have had quite a few problems with the Winchester white box, bulk pack stuff you show. But in the same guns, I found the Thunderbolts would cycle OK, even if the accuracy was mediocre.

Every single one of my 22s functions perfectly fine with every 22lr ammo I've shot from them.

It's a gun problem, not an ammo problem.

I agree, this stuff is awful!
Packed in grease so thick you have to let them soak in the sun then wipe off the softened grease with a towel just to get them to feed.
If you do get them to feed and fire, your breech and magazines get packed full of crud amazingly fast.

I actually have found federal automatch to work pretty consistently in my 1911 nelson conversion and ruger single ten (revolver).

The winchester bulk packs are garbage in both of the above guns. The bullets are slightly oversized which makes them very difficult to load into the revolver cylinder, and barely strong enough to cycle the slide on the nelson conversion. If my thumbs are touching the slide AT ALL, the winchester doesn't cycle. I have three packs left of it and then I'm done using it, period.

I had a feeding issue recently in my 10/22 and so I measured the diameter of the rounds. The rounds would chamber but not allow the bolt to close completely. Some are larger than others (0.01+/-). My rifle cycled the 0.223 better than the 0.224. There may be another issue but I wanted to eliminate the ammo as the problem. I also did a 5 round MV/SD test.

Standard deviation may not make much of a difference shooting at 100 yards but it was a fun test.

I actually found thunderbolts to be quite accurate and consistent in my BL-22 and SR22, but blackens the inside of the barrel so I would finish off my shoot with any copper plated rounds to "clean" it.

My 10/22 hates the federal automatch. I polished everything, swapped to the volquartsen extractor, etc. And I still get 1-2 stovepipes per 10 round mag. It does great with the Winchester bulk 555, CCI mini mags, Aguilar super extra, etc.

Now I'm stuck with 3 boxes of the stuff since I bought it during a sale

All my non automatics chew through everything [S&W 617, Henry lever, etc], tried several brands [CCI standard, velo, stinger, tactical, choot em bulk, Federal match, Aguila, Armscore, Remington bulk and non bulk] except for the thunderbolts.

Armscore I fould ... dirty/waxy compared to the others but would shoot fine.

The only issues I've had was gun related.. my 10/22 would FTF at least 1 round per magazine regardless what I was shooting [7 different OEM 10 round mags]. My comedy purchase ATI STG44 reproduction rifle would cycle through everything the 10/22 would not, so I wound up contacting ruger and they told me to RMA it and would check the bolt/pin since it should not be FTF with the brands and magazines I was using.

I hope I get my 10/22 fixed, it's the worst firearm I've purchased out of everything I own.

Just ran some Federal automatch for the first time through 10/22. They had a lot of FTE. At least 2 or 3 out of 10rd magazine. I have never had a problem with my 10/22 before. It was clean and oiled for range day. Anyone else thinks the same for automatch?

That's funny! Automatch is the only thing my POS GSG 1911 works with.
My 22/45 really loves them. They are only good to about ~20 yards.


I mag-dumped an entire brick of them the other day, rapid fire, with zero problems.


Rem Golden bullet though...
My Henry H001 bends golden bullets in half sometimes.
My 22/45 will feed them vertical, or close the slide as they are halfway chambered, pinching them in the middle.
They constantly jam in the GSG 1911

Buckmark and 10/22 never had an issue with GB though.

Only the Winchester bulk I had a slight issue with feeding on my SW 22a, it could be the feeding ramp but all other 22LR didn't exhibit such issue. Again , it was like 2-3 fail to feed out of the box that I shot

I shot .22LR from a totally stock Ruger 10/22 and a 22/45 with bull barrel. I have not had any feeding/firing/ejection problems from any particular ammo. I would say that I will get one fail-to-fire out of a brick of 550 Federal. Even the Remington Golden Bullet seems to run fine. Remember, this is not talking about accuracy, just feed and ejection.

I think 22s are like kids. Different ones have different things they do not like to eat.

Good info Mrrabbit. I get it. I could assume the automatch stuff has cheaper brass and might expand a bit on the way out. I better stick to the stuff it likes. It was the first time with fed. automatch so I should have test fired some before taking the whole box to the range.Thanks. Keep shootin straight y'all.

Have you had some ammo refuse to load in your mags ?

In some guns, the ammo makes a huge difference. In others, not so much.

In fact, I have never had a problem with any .22LR in a blot action rifle.
