Smith&Wesson 22A-1 ?

I had a 22a for awhile, good gun, pretty big though. They come up for sale in the Marketplace every now and again. I sold mine here some time back.

had this one over 10 years.. been finicky at times but sure is accurate..

puts the big grin on first time shooters.. they rack up a bunch of all black groups and they're hooked

Interesting. My 22A-1 has exactly the same problem with the blue Federal bulk ammo. That ammo shoots reliably in my 10-22, 925 and 795 but fails to fire 10-20% in the S&W and second strikes did not make them work either. I disassembled the "duds" and it looked like there was no priming compound on the rim(??!!). But somehow I get 100% success with ammo from the same box with the other guns.

Oh well, I'll just use Winchester, Remington or Federal Automatch (all 100% reliable) in the 22A-1 and keep the blue box Federals away from it.

Does this gun picky on the ammo ???? The reason I ask because when my "30 days" is over I will acquire this gun via FFT and I always buy the whatever brand (ammo) on sale.

I can't remember having problems with any ammo. I have not tried Winchester or CCI. I use Remington Golden, Thunderbolt, and Target; Federal Walmart bulk, and Auto-Match; RWS or Nobel Target. The most accurate in my 22A w/7" barrel is the Remington Thunderbolt. I have the first model 22A w/4" barrel that came out with the cheapo non-padded grip. I bought a spare 7" barrel off Gunbroker.

P.S. Don't use brake cleaner on the gun. It will eat the paint off.

Same experience that I have had with my 22A-1. Eats any ammo and I have used most 22 ammo on the planet in mine, from bulk, Std Vel, High Vel and sub-sonic. Hard to beat for the money.

I picked up mine used (here) in December for $250 with 2 mags. I have seen them as cheap as $150 and as high as $400+ (usually the 7" Hunter Model with wood grips and F.O. sights). Mags run between $20-$25 ea.

The wife just ran her 3rd Steel Challenge match last Sunday with this pistol. Ran like a champ and she is still shaving time off of her score every match! I'm secretly hoping she plateaus before she passes me

I will not sell my (used) 4" 22A, but if I were I would want $250-$300. I would not go under $250.

The 22A was the first .22 handgun I ever owned. I have a SR22 and between the 2 I dont think I will need another.... Great little pair.

Just put about a hundred rounds of Remington Thunderbolts I just picked up at Wally World last week (yeah, I know) through the 22A-1 and every one fired perfectly. The blue box Federal bulk was the only rimfire ammo I've ever had problems with and it was only in the 22A-1. I do have several more blue box Federal bulk boxes so I think I'll try another box from a different lot to see if it's the ammo type or maybe it was just a marginal lot.

Why is the 22A at its same price point but the dang SR22 went to $600!?
Even sig 22's are still at the $300 price point. What do I not know? The 22A is so much more accurate.
