This is what all gramdpas should do. I cherish the two shotguns my gramps gave to me. Wish I had the 44-40 that did not go to me.

    Nicely done.

My father (before he passed) handed my then-14-year-old son a 4" Colt Python as a gift. I was pissed because I wanted it for myself.

      Good Grandpas are priceless.
My friends and family disavow all knowledge of my existence, let alone my opinions.

My two sons have rifles that their Grandpa bought specifically for them, even before the youngest was born.

The oldest was about a year old when my Dad bought him a Browning BL-22 lever action. My Mom didn't think it was appropriate for a 1 year old, but let it slide. When he came home with the Browning .22 semi auto two months later, she asked him who the rifle was for, since she had already bought my son a rifle. Without missing a beat, he responded that it was in case I had another son, because he would need a quality rifle to learn to shoot. My Mom just shook her head and walked away. Two months later my Dad passed away unexpectedly and three years later I had another son. That rifle was always referred to as "Bryan's gun" and Bryan was the first person to shoot that gun when he was old enough. He cherishes the gift he got from the Grandpa he never got to meet.

Since I retired five years ago, I try to spend as much time with the Grandkids as possible. We are making memories to last a lifetime. Road trips to Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and California destinations are in the books. We've visited the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, Sequoia, Pismo Beach, Winchester Mystery House, Disneyland, Knotts, Sea World, San Diego Zoo, glider rides, gold mine tours, horseback riding, camping, the observatory where they discovered Pluto, Hollywood Walk of Fame, La Brea Tar Pits, and the Space Shuttle in LA. They spend a couple of weeks with us every summer. We do the "Summer of Fun" adventures, versions 1-5 so far. This summer will be camping in Utah and visits to Zion and Bryce National Parks, and maybe Arches NP.

We've also been fortunate enough to take them to the UK twice. The first trip we were able to spend 4 nights in an apartment inside of Hampton Court Palace, which was built in 1515 and was used by King Henry VIII as a Royal residence.

They've been able to explore medieval castles, ruins of Roman fortifications, ancient Cathedrals and Abbeys, as well as the modern sights such as Buckingham Palace and the London Eye.

It's cut into my gun collecting, but I have pretty much every gun I really want. We also don't spend a lot on birthday or Christmas presents. They have all the toys and video games they need, so we give "adventure and exploration" as gifts

The memories, both theirs and ours, are priceless. We involve them in the planning of each adventure, and when we are in major cities, we make them learn how to navigate the city and public transportation.

          Best thread ever.

I highly recommend getting the hk push pins, hk rear sight, and the gsg5 conversion for the gsg. All super cheap upgrades that are well worth your while!

You are giving your grandkids something much better than things, you are giving them your time. They will never forget this.

As a teacher, I see so many kids today that do not get enough adult attention at home. All kids need parents and grandparents that spend quality time with them. Face it, grandpas are always much cooler than dads and so kids often will listen to them when they are tuning out dad.
Anyone can look around and see the damage to the state and country inflicted by bad politicians.

A vote is clearly much more dangerous than a gun.

Why advocate restrictions on one right (voting) without comparable restrictions on another (self defense) (or, why not say 'Be a U.S. citizen' as the requirement for CCW)?

I'm planning on those upgrades. The GSG has the full stock but I've found a kit where you can change it to a collapsing stock if he changes his mind later. I've ordered each kid two extra magazines. Thankfully they live in Arizona where they can have 25 and 22 round magazines without any concerns.

Can you recommend a good source for the sight, pins, & kit?

Absolutely. There's a very wide variance in prices between retailers. Here's what I found:

CDNN is by far the cheapest for the conversion kit.
Hkparts.com is the cheapest for the push pins and rear sight.
And HKspecialist is the cheapest for the metal top rail and mag clamps.
Ebay also sells the mag clamps for the same price ~$1111

If you end up getting jams or light primer strikes, check out my A5 vs Gsg522 thread on how to fix it! Very very fun gun.

Also highly recommend getting a dualing tree!

Work gave me some of those, but they don't help you buy guns.

Thanks. Great info. Yes, on the dueling tree. I want a good one but there's a couple more guns I want to get for the kids first. Hopefully one of the nibbles I have on my marketplace sale items will come thru. That money all goes to my gun savings.

Awesome grandpa! Selfless act, selling off some of yours to get them theirs. Great role model indeed.
