.22LR Pistol Recommendations

I have a Ruger mkIII 22/45, S&W m&p 22, GSG 1911, Ruger single six, all are fun gun's to shoot but my buckmark is by far my most accurate 22 & eat's bulk ammo with no problem.

I like the Ruger SR22 and plan to get one very soon.

Some say it's a better made blatant copy of the Walther P22.

Spent 4 hours at the range today with a Buckmark, Ruger Mkii, and S&W 617 10-shot. I was using cheap Remington and had 3 duds in the first 20 rounds fired. First off, I wouldn't rely on .22LR as self defense and certainly not cheap .22 rounds. I am a fairly proficient hand gunner with a number of different calibers from .22 to .44MAG.
I have had the Ruger MKii the longest and I am most accurate with it. Today was my first outing with the Buckmark(which is brand new) and the 617(which is pre-owned). I shot real well today with the Buckmark but not as good as with the Ruger. The 617 is a sweetheart (shot darn near as good as the MKii)and if you insist on .22LR, then a 10 shot revolver would be my choice. I learned to shoot using a double action revolver, so I have a soft spot for revolvers. I am going to have fun attempting to deplete my supply of 22LR with these 3 pistols.
Only issues I have had have been failure to fire duds and no failure to extracts or failure to cycles yet. My vote would be for Mkii or iii, Buckmark or S&W revolver.

Buy a Glock 17 and Advantage Arms conversion kit and 10 mags.
Buy tons of rimfire ammo, the Glock AA kit likes HV ammo for break in, then HV and STD 22lr after 500 rounds.

Then go shoot

+1. For someone just getting into handguns now and wanting a .22 lr to practice with, it would be hard to beat a Glock 17 or 19 combined with a Advantage Arms .22 lr conversion slide.

Thanks guys, I'll look into the Buckmark and the GSG/Sig 1911-22.

I'll probably get a 9mm sometime down the line, but .22LR is just much more feasible for me right now. Especially since I already have a 10/22. It just makes things simpler.

S&W 22A can be found for ~270$ or less...

All 22A's have been discontinued by S&W. If you want one, get it now while you can.

The remaining inventory out there isn't being replenished. It's being replaced by the 22 Victory which isn't on the roster.

So 3 more guns will disappear off the roster since they aren't being made anymore.

The Smith & Wesson M&P 22 Compact and the Ruger SR22 are not California legal, so I guess Walther P22 is the only choice. Unless you get a Revolver or a 1911 22.

Phoenix Arms HP22 I have one and love it! Shot all different kinds of ammo with no issues what so ever. Small gun but heavy and accurate. You can even get a range/target kit with a longer barrel. You can find them for around $125-$175. There is an all black version and a satin nickel with black grips. Check it out!

Remington bucket-o-bullets, and Remington thunderbolt, federal value pack ammo, various Winchester rounds, CCI and Aguila few high velocity rounds but mostly standard. Never tried any subsonic rounds.

What you should know about 22LR automatic pistols. The quality control for 22LR ammo varies and different 22 automatic hand guns react some badly to certain brands. After researching and testing many 22LR pistols, one stands out as the best for consistent operation, quality control, and accuracy. That would be the Browning 1911 22LR. They are 80% the size of the full 1911 and come in compact and full size. They are on the CA roster, and I have been shooting mine for about 1,000 rounds without a single malfunction and they have digested everything from bulk ammo to the always reliable Mini mags and their cheaper cousin Blazers. They are a bit pricier than others but the quality is there. Takes down just like its big brother 45 ACP model. The sights are a bit lame, but putting a white dot (paint) on the front sight for target contrast, makes it a very accurate little pistol.

My birthday is coming up, and with it I should be able to legally purchase a handgun. I've decided that I should get a .22LR pistol to hone my pistol shooting skills with out breaking the bank. What I really wanted to get was a Ruger Mark III, but to my chagrin it has since been dropped from the Roster. So then it looks to me like the Buckmark is the other main contender. But I have heard reports about the Buckmark having trouble with bulk ammunition, which poses a problem, since bulk ammunition is about all I shoot.

So, I would like some suggestions on .22LR pistols that are available in California. What are your thoughts?

All 22 LR pistols have a challenge because the quality control of ammo is unreliable at best, and lower velocity ammo many times does a poor job of ejecting the spent round, either fully or stove pipe. I first purchased a Walther P22 which is a cool looking gun but many stoppages before I made modifications and selected the more expensive ammo. After a lot of research and advise from several of my buddies, I bought a Browning 1911 22LR pistol. It is an exact copy of the Browning 1911 but in 22LR and 80% of the size. I have about 1,000 rounds through it without a single malfunction. It comes in a compact and full size version, and also a more expensive black label model with much improved sights. On the standard model, I painted the front ramp sight white on the back edge to give it some contrast, and it is very accurate with this slight modification. It is a bit more expensive than some of the other options but for the reliability and fit and feel it is the best I have tried. It takes down just like its big brother, which includes removal of the barrel for cleaning rather than the fixed barrel to frame like on the SIG or S&W version. It is on the CA roster. I did buy it on line for about $150 savings from factory prices but with extra cost of shipping and dealer handling fees. Boils down to about $80 savings which I spent on two additional Mags from Browning. Good luck on your choices.

On-roster I'd just get a Buckmark, but SP101 8-shot, and Single Ten would be on my list to check out too. I have a MK-II Target, SP101 and a bunch of others including P22 and GSG, but Buckmarks are right up there with MKII's and on-roster.

1911 with a 22LR upper. Yea, it's a bit of a pain to switch (not because it's difficult, but because you get lazy). I like that it is exactly the same gun as my .45. This has helped a bit in the accuracy department when shooting the two back to back
