Need help with building AR-15 in 22lr

Hey guys, New shooter and member here. This is a great place and am really enjoying myself so far.

So Im looking to get my first rifle Im interested in a AR-15 platform in 22LR.
I was just about set on getting myself a 15-22 MOE but the more I've read up
it seems like building a AR might be a better option as than Ill have a lower when
I decide its time to move up to .223, .556. Also does anyone know where I
could get the MOE version here in Cali?

Seems like it will cost me an arm and a leg to build an AR especially compared to
the 15-22 route which seems I could get one for around $500. So are their any
22LR builds that compare to that cost? Or am I stuck with having to spend near
a grand. Also could someone post links to the parts I would need to build a
dedicated 22lr. Im willing to spend around $700 if possible. Id even buy used
    if that would cut costs.

And as far as legality issues here in Calif what are the dos and don't about
buying these parts. Lowers need to be stripped correct? And uppers are fine?
Sorry but Im still new to all this and so much info to take in. Appreciate any
    help.

Look for a TACTICAL SOLUTIONS AR-22 complete upper.

OR just pick up the whole thing (good price just for the upper)
IF your into plastic the lower is a bonus.

My 22lr build went a bit out of your budget because I went with a tactical solutions upper, but you could get a DPMS upper and land in the $500-700 range for the whole rifle. I love my tacsol upper, it runs like a sewing machine, but the DPMS upper is probably good too, maybe research them a bit...

        DPMS 22 upper at Midway

For the lower I would get a stripped lower and build it out. You could get a "customizable" lower parts kit for $25, a receiver extension/buffer/spring for $40, a magpul CTR stock for $57, a magpul MOE+ grip for $23. With the specifics I've called out you're looking at about $550 and from there you'll need a stripped lower, a trigger, and a rear sight. I think you can really make or break your budget on those items (and arguably on the stock and grip too) so you'd have to make some trade-offs.

Because it's a rimfire rifle, it doesn't trigger the assault weapon law, so you can build it without a bullet button and still have a pistol grip/telescoping stock/flash hider. In my case, I have multiple ARs and not all of them are rimfire, so I have bullet buttons in all my lowers just to be safe.

I also run a CMMG conversion bolt in a standard AR, it works great. I run a Taccom pressure plug in the buffer tube with the CMMG bolt.

My buddy has a DPMS upper. Both are reliable and accurate.

I have the DPMS heavy barrel dedicated upper. LOVE IT! Feeds well, uses Black Dog mags, & really accurate. Got it from DPMS directly, they had it on a Black Friday sale last year & I couldn't resist.

Thanks for the info so far. What do you guys think of this upper?

Can you guys tell me if these two are compatible and what else I would need to complete this build. Looks like that upper and lower will run me $720. What else would I need.

I built mine (.22) on an inexpensive lower with a PSA power parts kit, a used M&P 15 upper ($40 from CG member here), cheap muzzle break, $40 free float tube, and a cmmg conversion kit with the barrel, cheap red dot, black doc mags and a A2 fixed buttstock. I got the kit on sale for less than $200 (that's the hard part to get cheap).

                        So,
                        $200 kit
                        $40 upper
                        $40 LPK
                        $80 lower
                        $40 stock
                        $40 free float tube
                        $25 muzzle device
                        $60 red dot.

Don't remember how much the mags were. But total comes close to $500. It's a tack driver.

So if you are patient, and fast on the draw you can find good deals that will fulfill your needs. Especially with the Christmas season approaching.

                        Good luck!
                        Sorry, not sorry.

Nice job with keeping it at $500. Bet is shoots great.

So I think I found the upper I really want. The Nordic Components 22RB

Nordic Components' 22RB Dedicated 22 Upper converts your AR15-pattern rifle into a dedicated 22 rimfire just by changing upper receivers.

Can't go wrong with that upper, looks nice!

One thing to note with .22 lr AR builds is you need a full power hammer spring to reliably ignite the rimfire primers.

I run a ALG ACT trigger in my .22 lr AR(CMMG upper), and it gives a lighter than mil spec trigger pull with mil spec trigger reliability.

I'm personally going with a Taccom complete upper.
