Walther P22 or Sig Sauer Mosquito?

Looking for something for my wife. She has strength issues in her arms and cant even pull back the slide on my Sig SP2022. I can get the Walther new for about what a used Mosquito will run me. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The hard trigger is good to know. As I said my wife has strength and grip issues so she may not be able to work the trigger well. I'm not worried about finding the ammo because it won't be our primary weapon. Just trying to find something for my wife to play with at the range in a semi auto but been thinking maybe a revolver is best for her with her issues. I think I'm going to see about renting some guns to let her try before we actually buy something for her.

Have her try a ruger SP 101

There is a long thread about letting your wife pick her own gun in the Ladies Forum.
Would a Buckmark be too heavy for her?

I am letting her pick her own. I show her the guns and explain about them. She isn't too big on revolvers either but that might be what he needs. I'll check that thread out but my wife will have the final say on what she gets. She wanted one like mine but can't even pull the slide.

I don't know if it wold be too heavy but the actual weight isn't the problem. It's being able to pull the slide. She has a constant tremor and weak dexterity.

We originally were going g to get a Walther P22 alone for range time and home protection. But then I got a little money and decided to step up to the Sig and now she wants her own so we can go to the range and practice together.

I think I read somewhere fairly recently that Sig is no longer making the Mosquito, probably due to it being so finicky on ammo. Don't know if that would factor into your decision.

Now that you mention it I believe I read that as well. I guess we`ll just play it by ear. She is really not in any hurry. From what I read most of the .22`s are finicky on ammo which doesnt really bother me unless she isnt able to physically unjam it or clear it out.

I got an M&P22CA pistol for my wife. It has been very reliable for a .22lr and functions great with cheap bulk ammo. I would definitely rate the M&P22 pistol higher then the P22 and Mosquito. I've heard nothing but bad things about the Mosquito. The M&P22CA pistol is not on the roster anymore but I've seen a few used ones for sale in the Calguns marketplace. As far as .22lr pistols on the roster there's several high quality options, the Ruger MarkIII & 22/45 and the Browning Buckmark.

I've owned the walter p22 before , bought it to teach wife's friend who has small hands. Its grip is short and narrow, so it'll fit a small hand well.

However, the pistol is really cheaply built. It was only $220 new, so not expensive, but I did't even think I got my money's worth (it's slide is really light, made of cheap zinc alloy or something). If I didn't need such a small pistol, I wouldn't have bought it.

It shoots ok, not accurate but works ok.

Lots of love hate on the web for the P22 as it is very ammo finicky (need higher power to cycle the slide). On the walther forums is a whole P22 manual dedicated to little mods (mainly polishing areas) to improve it. I love mine and as long as you feed it good quality ammo - CCI mini mags for example (there are even test details on the web for various ammo like don't use golden bullet bucket of ammo bottom of the barrel 22lr) I've had no issues or problems. The slide is a little cheap feeling - like pot metal - but I love the size & it has a rail the make a laser for it. I'll never sell mine.

Don't limit yourself to new pistols. I know it's hard to tell if you like something by just looking at a picture but show her some pictures of different guns and see what she likes.

The browse the for sale section here and other places on the web, I could tell you but it would be more fun for you to try and find them. Check out all of your LGS and see what the have on consignment. Get to know them well and be sure to leave you name and number with them. If you're lucky they just might call you with the deal of the century.

                      Good luck.
                      Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

GSG 1911-22 is a nice full size 22 pistol if size isn't an issue.

The Sig is by far the worst pistol I've ever had the displeasure of owning. Always malfunctioned, eventually would fire on safe...sold it to a friend who likes to tinker for $150. He fixed the safety, but it still runs like junk.

My wife is a petite 5.5' so I bought her a Ruger SP101. It comes with a heavy trigger pull (10-11 lbs) and she couldn't quite pull the trigger back all they way. However, I had planned to (and did) do a trigger job and also replaced the factory springs with the Wolff package. Now it pulls as smooth as butter. She loves it! And it's heavy too so she could always pistol whip an assailant.
