Russian Training Rifle ?

I picked this rifle up a couple days ago from the local gun shop. When I first looked at it it was called a Mauser 22 bolt action. After doing a bunch of research I was able to find that Tula made training rifles in .22 cal called TOZs. I believe there was a TOZ 8 and a couple other variants. Every one I have seen in pics has a different receiver and or stock. This one has some small stampings on the stock, the Tula stamp on the barrel with 1950r under it.

The trigger is very light, between 1.5-2lbs and the gun feels great. It has a bull barrel with a graduated rear sight and a globe style post up front. I can't wait to shoot it, it feels so nice.

Does anyone have any ideas on where to find info on this piece or history on them? Seems its very hard to find with only race amounts of info.

Tula TOZ-8 have a good reputation as a precision .22 rifle. They were cheaper a few years ago from the importers, but seems a lot of folks are hanging on to theirs. Congratulations on a good buy. That also looks like some nice wood furniture.

The Russian rifles have a reputation for good accuracy, but a bit on the rough side exterior wise. Check out the Russian Forum on Rim Fire Central.

It's a single shot, right? I have a single shot Chinese copy of the same rifle stamped as a JW-8. I think mine was mis-stamped by the importer because JW-8's were a 5 shot magazine fed repeater.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah the stock does show promise. It has the russian red varnish with a few roughed up spots but the wood does have a very nice grain.

This one is a single shot. No magazine. A lot of what I was trying to research had a magazine or different stock, etc. I picked this rifle up thinking it might be good for my boys to train on when the get a little older then move up to a Ruger 10/22 after this. Id actually kinda like it now just for myself. =)

I took it out yesterday and fired a handful of rounds and am extremely pleased with the way it feels. A couple down sides to the rifle are, you are off target every time you load the rifle and reset the firing pin, and there are no windage adjustments, but as far as shooting it's nice. I was grouping fairly decent while sooting off hand and having a left side 10-12mph cross wind at 35 yards. I really want to see what it will do on a bench with limited wind. Maybe I'll try first thing tomorrow morning.

It was a training rifle for high school students in ussr. They were fired mostly indoors range usually located behind every school stadium. 22LR. Not too accurate. Should cost around $25.

Huh? Can you clarify on this a bit?

They should cost $25. And they are not too accurate due to poor manufacturing process, lack of any maintenance during it's lifetime ( it's a surplus ). Schools would send them back for replacement instead of repairing and maintaining. Simple as that. How much did you pay for yours?

Talking about The TOZ-8

Well I believe it was $199 and so far shoots great. It's built pretty robust as most Russian industrial machinery seems to be and after firing about 75 rounds through it yesterday functioned flawlessly. I was at 35yrds with a cross wind shooting offhand and my group of three shots were about a 1 inch spread side by side. I'll pull the bench out tomorrow morning and put it on paper, wind permitting, and see what the rifle will do on its own. I'm pretty confident it will hold its own.

It look like you have a worthy of price rifle. Experience I had was nowhere near of what you describe. It only matters if you like what you have. So enjoy and keep us posted of any updates.
