    1911 22lr conversion vs. 22lr pistol?

As far as accuracy and reliability, is a 1911 conversion comparable with a 22/45 or a Buckmark or similar? Is it even worth the cost at @$220 for a conversion, or would I be better off with a separate pistol?

I love the idea of having the same ergonomics/same pistol in 22, but I am not sure about the accuracy.

I've heard good things about the Marvel conversions when I was looking at them for Bullseye comps. http://www.marvelprecision.com/unit2.php

There might be a newer version of this, but I've misplaced that link at the moment.

Do you have a type of manufacturer in mind you are looking into? I picked up an (if I remember correctly) EAA upper for my 1911 for about $100. It does OK if your just looking to play but not 100% reliable. I ponied up and bought a Browning 1911-22 and have had zero issues.

IMO if your just looking to practice trigger squeeze or pop at cans, a conversion is fun. If you want reliability and can afford it, a dedicated model for .22 might make keep you happier.

I have a Ruger 22/45 and once I got a decent trigger in it love it, shoots as good as my Tac/Sol Buckmark.
Most of the 22 conversions are reasonably accurate but if your going for super accurate rimfire stuff then your better off with a Ruger, Buckmark, Woodsman, or the S&W target pistols IMHO.

I had a sig Mosquito and while mine ran perfectly a lot of others did not. I also had a Walther and it was cool but felt tiny and kinda plasticky, so I went back to the Buckmark and Rugers.

Well, I am awaiting my Kimber custom II, so I was planning on a Kimber conversion. I see them sell on Gun Broker for @$220. I *think* that it is a marvels conversion, but not sure. The other choice would be a Wilson, which is a Marvels conversion.

I love my Kimber conversion mounted on my old Kimber Classic. IT's what I use when I want to shoot a .22lr 1911. I have 2 22-45s that I shoot when I want to shoot a 22-45.

Being that those are better brand names than the conversion I have they may run just fine. I would hope so for the cost anyway. I'm curious to see what others have experienced as well.

How does the accuracy compare between the conversion and the 22/45?

I have the GSG conversion that I got on sale from Palmetto on sale for $128.50 delivered. Wasn't really in the market for one, but couldn't pass up that price. Your mileage may vary, but it won't compare to my 22/45 for accuracy.

The GSG is mounted on my Gold Cup frame. I accurized my Gold Cup, peening the rails and fitting the slide, and did all of the hand fitting on the barrel. It will easily outshoot the GSG conversion. The GSG slide still fits, and functions with all ammo types I've tried, but there's still the tolerances between slide to frame, bushing to slide, and bushing to barrel that will affect accuracy (1.5" at 25 yards with bulk ammo); and that you don't have with the 22/45 (3/4" at 25 yards, same ammo).

There are some accurizing bits you can get for the GSG/Sig, like a conical barrel end and matching bushing, but I'm just using the conversion for plinking, so I won't be spending more money on it.

I have a Kimber conversion on a Gold Cup 80. 100% reliable and fairly accurate. Not a Ruger fan so I don't know how it compares to them. Neither one are proper target guns.

To be honest, I've never shot them side by side and compared groups (precision) but, as far as "accuracy" goes, they both have properly adjusted sites so, their POIs are centered around their POAs.

Skip the conversion. Buy a .22LR pistol.

My son and I both have Kimber units, he on his Kimber, and mine on my Gold Cup. They are both very accurate with it's preferred fodder, Mini-Mags. The only thing I miss is the last round hold open, but for the killer prices I got them for, both lightly used with extra magazines, I don't miss it much. They shoot as well as any of my dedicated .22's, of which I have several.

Tactical Solutions 2211 .22 LR conversion kit on a Colt frame.
                              (no issues)
                              Ruger 22/45 with a 6 7/8 slabside barrel.

The 1911 with the conversion feels more like a 1911.
