Respect the Golden Bullet

I looked at the casing a little more closely to diagnose what happened. To me, the bulge in the case indicates that the gun was not fully in battery when it went off. Most likely the bullet wasn't chambered completely, so the rear of the casing wasn't supported by the chamber, causing the bulging and then the rupture.
Like a fair number of semi-autos, Glocks probably being the most notable, there isn't a safety mechanism that keeps the hammer of Ruger MK II's, or 10/22's from falling when the bolt isn't fully foward (or slide locked, for centerfire semi-auto pistols). Other semi-autos, like Colt 45 ACP's etc. have a mechanism that disables the trigger when the slide is even a hint out of battery.
In this case, I suspect a couple of things could have caused the round not to fully chamber:
1. The chamber had enough crud in it that didn't allow the round to fully chamber. The pistol has at least 200 rounds through it, but was able to fire another couple hundred after this failure, so it doesn't look like the problem here. Also, although I'm in the camp of never cleaning the bore of a 22LR gun until accuracy drops off, I do always make a point of cleaning the chamber after every session to ensure reliable cycling.
2. The brass was slightly over sized on this round. This makes more sense, due to quality control on bulk ammo being lower, and Golden Bullets run on the larger diameter end of the spectrum. This is why they are not recommended for a match cut chamber, and sometimes even have issues with a target/benz cut chamber. No problems in a stock (loose) Ruger chamber though.
So my conclusion is that the primary issue is likely that the brass was over-sized and didn't fully chamber, and secondarily, the inherent issue of the Ruger action that allows the hammer to fall when the gun isn't fully in battery both contributed to the failure.
I'm going to take some measurements of the front/non-bulging portion of the casing to see how it compares to other rounds and spent casings, although that might not be conclusive, it may provide another clue.Last edited by RawHP; 04-29-2015, 9:27 AM.Comment

Look like a OOB detonation...
Just guessing tho.
But yea your lucky it was just a 22. I wouldn't doubt it could happen with any. I shoot any 22 I can get my hands on, this day and age even more so. Even with CCI high grade stuff the charges very and QC on 22 is not the greatest. You what you pay for. $0.04 - $0.07 isn't much lol
I would have kept the case like you and kept shooting. Federal and GB you can always hear/feel lighter vs heavier charges. Id say usually more than half each mag I can count around 5 hotter or under charged rounds. Again just part of the downfall of cheap 22.Comment

This happened to me with cheap Tula Crap 7.62x51 in my pre-ban Galil. It wasn't actually scary, some smoke, and nothing much after. The bullet barely got out of the barrel and I had to use a rod and mallet to push the case out.The Second Amendment ex-tends, prima facie, to all instruments that constitute bearable arms, even those that were not in existence at the time of the founding. - The United States Supreme CourtComment

I think it's a characteristic of Remington Golden Bullet brass:

Probably other Remington 22LR too, since I saw a pic of Yellow Jackets with the same line of the brass.
In looking for this pic on the web, I saw another posting where someone had the same type of failure. His looked a little worse, but the same area by the base of the casing.Last edited by RawHP; 04-29-2015, 2:18 PM.Comment

This right here is why you should NEVER shoot Remington Golden Bullets. Instead ship them to me for proper disposal.

Actually, in the name of safety, and providing more information and data, I'm going to take on the risk and sacrifice by shooting all of my Golden Bullets, plus any more I can snag up online or at Walmart and reporting back to the forum. I really need to do my part to protect the public; my way of giving back.Comment
