Good .17 HMR Rifle?

You will not regret buying a CZ. Best bang for the $$$ and hold their value better than savage or marlin. The fit and finish of a CZ is much better than either a Savage (which I have) or a Marlin (which I have) However its more about the accuracy of the .17HMR round than the rifle that shoots it. That round is just inherently more accurate than .22lr at extended ranges due to the design, manufacture and ballistics.

My .17HMR is a Savage BTVS and will mostly shoot MOA @ 100yds and would probably do it all the time were I a better shooter. If given the chance look at a Savage, Marlin and CZ and decide which is the better made rifle.

Definitely some good info. VQ is really out of my budget although I've heard nothing but the best about them. I was thinking a bolt gun for accuracy and it'd help slow how fast I'd spend $ on ammo.

Any info on ammo preferences besides the weight?

I have had a Savage 93 for a few years now (accustock with the heavy barrel) It's a good rifle. having said that I recently bought a CZ455 Varmint and it runs rings around the Savage. The Accutrigger is nice but the CZ is built better. The fit and finish is nicer as well.

For the cost of just the CZ rifle I am pretty close to what I paid for the savage, scope and rings.

Just get both.

Use the Savage to introduce people to the great cartridge that is .17HMR and shoot the CZ yourself.

Depends on the rifle. My Savage likes Hornady 17grain and CCI 20grain about equally. Based on my experience with those rounds I would suggest that you start with a 50 round box of each and see what works best. Some bad reviews on the Winchester 17 grain rounds. My Savage didn't like them and had an occasional case rupture near the end where the bullet was.

I have two of the Savages a 93R FV and a BTVS the FV needs a cheek riser but it shot the group shown, 25 rounds back to back at 100 yds.

I have shot my pops .17 HMR it was a Ruger bolt with laminated stock and heavy barrel. It was money! I'm looking to take out paper and ground squirrels.

What are some good bolt .17 HMRS that you've gotten good results out of? 700 is the top end of the budget?

If $700 is your limit, buy the CZ Varmint. Replace the barrel with a Lilja barrel and sell the factory barrel for $120, spend the remainder on a box of ammo.
Savage and Ruger won't even come close in accuracy.

CZ452 American .22HMR Nikon Monarch scope

I like the thumbhole stocks, I didn't want hump a bull barrel around so I opted for the American. I shoot from a rest 99% of the time.

The new cz455's have the switch barrel.

Function and accuracy have been outstanding. I own rimfires from Marlin Savage and others, the cz's seem to perform at a higher level given their reasonable [price.

I just recently came back from a fun squirrel trip. Took my cz455 out for the third time. Love it!

CZ452FS and it shoots great. I had scoped but was too easy to shoot. Went back to Irons. Still very accurate.

I have a Savage 93 bull barrel that I bedded into a Boyds thumhole stock. I zeroed it, jeez, years ago now and it shoots well within 1 minute of squirrel cranium every time when I do my part. I regularly pull it out of the safe, walk outside and drill a squirrel or two, and put it away again.

I actually grew to really like the accutrigger as well, the only extra I bought was a 10 round mag.

Definitely have to suggest the Savage BTVS in .17hmr (or wait for a Savage Bmag .17WSM with a heavy barrel).
