Good .17 HMR Rifle?

I've been contimplating my next rim fire rifle purchase. I've owned a magnum research .22, various other .22 magnums I own a Mach2, but I still am not getting what I want out of the gun. I have shot my pops .17 HMR it was a Ruger bolt with laminated stock and heavy barrel. It was money! I'm looking to take out paper and ground squirrels.

What are some good bolt .17 HMRS that you've gotten good results out of? 700 is the top end of the budget?

I have a CZ 452 Varmint in 17 HMR and it's a tack driver.

I've got the marlin 917. Groups great, and works great on ground squirrels. Plus, it has a detachable mag so when I'm hunting I will have 3 loaded in my pocket with one in the gun while the critters are running good.

What size groups were you guys getting with either the cz, or savage. I've heard good things about the cz. Idk why I have apprehensions about the brand probably because I've never owned anything cz. The Mach 2 I have is a savage, but the accuracy out of it was horrible.

My Savage 93R17 BRJ generally runs 1" 5 shot groups @ 100 yards for me. And I'm nothing special (nor really very good at all) at benchrest shooting. Don't practice enough. The gun is way more accurate than I am.

The above assumes a pretty calm day. Winds, especially cross winds, significantly impact the light 17 HMR projectile, at least in my experience, at 100 yards or greater.

+1 for the CZ 452. Mine is sub mow with almost any ammo.

Other option to negate the crosswinds would be to go up to .223. Just wanted to avoid all the noise. The picture of the savage on this thread is looking pretty nice. Spiral fluted barrel is pretty clean.

I felt the same way several years ago until I bought my first CZ rim fire. Now all the others (Savage .17 Ruger 10/22, and Marlin 60) stay in the safe. CZ's may cost a little more, but they are worth a lot more.

I have the Savage with Bull Barrel. sub 1" at 100yds if I do my part and no wind.
Likes CCI 17Gr V-Max the best.

I also have a savage 93 bull barrell. I can pick off quarters off a rest at 100 yds. I have first time shooters use it and most of them can pick off baseballs at the same distance within the first couple shots....I love mine....
Crosswinds will wreak havoc on the light projectiles tho....but otherwise that's my reccomendation
