    Not enough glass.

Picked up a Savage m93 in 17hmr used, it came with the Bushnell 3x9x40 as part of the package. I restocked it with a Boyd's Evolution Stock and lightened up the trigger and it shoots pretty well. I'll use this rifle for targets and vermin both on and off a rest.

I'm not happy with scope and would like to upgrade to something with a bit more magnification. What are you using and how did you mount it? Budget is not a significant issue if it's the right glass, pictures if you have them.

    Thank you!

Do you have a idea of what range you will be shooting target/vermin at?
I had a 18X and found it to be a little too much. Shoot at 100yds most of the time. Went with a Nikon 14x and for me seems about right.

It depends on your shooting Some of the open ARA shooters run a 36X scope . You have to do some shopping!!

Range of 50 stretched to 200yds for the right shot. Occam tell me more about your 14x set up.

Seems a variable highest quality scope is what you are looking for, especially 200 yard shots on squirrel sized targets.

Personally for something like that I would recommend an inexpensive Center Point. You can get an 18x for about $100 and they hold up pretty well. I have put them on my .270, -06 and .308 as well as a .22 and never had an issue. They are owned by Crossman and have a lifetime warranty.

I have a 93 in 22wmr, put a thumb hole stock and a simmon white tail scope it's 6.5x 20x 50mm 20 is great off a benchrest, up to about 10 you can shoulder. look up Appachee trigger, it will be the best $35 you'll invest in the rifle.

Millet tactical 4-16X SF. Kaspa 4-12X SF. I shoot lots of squirrels with rimfires and both of these have decent glass and good reticles for squirrels. Hawkes are good too but have become over priced.

Savage 93r17 used to have a Weaver T-24 now wears a Mueller Eraticator 8.5-25x50mm with thin crosshairs and target dot. Excellent bench and varmint scope and rifle

I agree that it depends on your intended use for the rifle.
I use a Bushnell 4x12 for my RF 22 and 17 for varmint control and casual target shooting.
No bench rest shooting here so no need for uber power beyond that. Personal preference.

Good post. Scope choice should always be for the intended use of the firearm.

I tried 4 different scopes on my .17 increasing the magnification until I settled on an older Tasco 8-32 target scope with the fine cross hairs and target dot. The problem when it's on 32x is every heart beat makes the dot jump an inch on the target.
The plus side is, I can see the .17 hole on paper, pinpoint where I want the hole to be, and with no recoil, watch the impact on other types of targets.

TRAP55, I believe you can shoulder up to about 10x after that you need a bench rest. If you know you are going to hunt and only shoot off your shoulder don't waste your money on a high powered scope. If bench shooting is your thing you might want a high powered fixed scope. From my experience spend as much or more then you can afford on your optics.

Mueller makes some of the best 8x32 8.5x25 etc. At 50 yards even a top quality 3x9x40 is fair at best. If you're shooting 1/4 inch (or smaller) at 50, don't settle.
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!
