Anyone switch from red dot to scope?

Currently running an H1/Larue mount combo on my AR but the flexibility of a 1-6x is very tempting, especially considering the great reviews on the Vortex Razor Gen2 1-6x and how great it is at 1x. The most obvious change on paper is the extra weight between a scope and a red dot, especially coming from a Micro H1/T1. Has anyone switched from a red dot to a scope? Just wanted general thoughts on how the transition was. One of the other scopes I was considering is the Trijicon TR24....Thanks!

I've switched and then gone back. Then built a dedicated scoped AR.

It all depends on what type of shooting your doing, minute of man or minute of angle

You're going to appreciate magnification once you get out to 100Y or so. I run both but use my scopes a lot more. And you can shoot an illuminated scope as fast as a red dot!
The only place you're going to miss having a red dot is if you spend a lot of time shooting in supine or other unconventional positions or low light shooting.

I run both on one rifle. 45 deg mounted RDS. Scope set to max magnification. 1x on scope is for backup purpose in case RDS dies.

              +1

started with a micro. then switched to a trijicon tr-24. then built another AR so each optic has a dedicated rifle. different tools, different purposes. both optics, however, are awesome. micro slightly faster close up, versatility of the tr-24 is absurd. weight difference is very noticeable, you will not want to lug around the rifle with the tr-24 all day, especially knowing you have a lightweight rifle with the micro on it.

Appreciate the input guys...building a second isn't an option at this time...I don't want this to become a VS thread. Was simply looking for input and experiences from those people that have actually made the switch.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing with one of my AR'S. I currently have an aimpoint pro with a 3x mag on it, but I don't see well enough at distance to hit anything. I've been thinking about switching to a 1x4 or a 3x6. So I feel your pain OP

I love my TR24G have had for few years- 1-4x w green triangle reticle. I have not tried some of the newer 1-6's out there but to me the TR24G is top notch combination of red dot w ability to crank to 4x and reach out medium ranges. It's Trijicon so built like a tank and I apologize as too lazy to look up specs but it is very light for a full scope. Something like 14 oz, around same as an Eotech.

Now certainly that would feel heavy compared to a T/H-1 which I have never owned, but it is a very light scope which I like about it, just make sure keep it light w whatever mount you use. It is true 1x w both eyes open, just a split second slower on target acquisition compared to my Eotech- the scope amazes me how can put that bright green triangle right on target at 1x so quickly very similar to my Eotech.

Unfortunately no bdc for when crank up to 4x but w 4moa green triangle can figure out few holdovers. Like said, I haven't even looked what's out there for newer 1-4's and 1-6's these days but if looking for a light, rugged, true 1x scope for quick target acquisition that can crank up to 4x as well, to me this is my do all scope for up close to medium ranges. Love it- currently on an LMT 16" 5.56.

I have the HD razor 1-6 and IMHO it is by far the best all around optic for an AR. I have several AR's and several different optics but the Razor is the most used and enjoyed. It has a very friendly eyebox, daylight visible red dot, incredibly clear glass, and the JM reticle is very good for long range. It is a true 1X and I find it faster to transition than the H1 by far. There are only two drawbacks to the Razor; 1. Weight for it's power and, 2. Price. If I were in you're position and could only have one AR I would keep the H1/Larue for lightweight set-up and get the Razor and a Larue or American Defense Recon QD mount. That way you can choose whichever set-up you want on any given outing.

Thanks for the input. The cost of the optic definitely is a consideration. I found a TR24 + LaRue mount for a good price, so that is what I've gone with at this time.

I had a eotech on mine for a while and recently changed it out for a leupold vx-r patrol with the fire dot in 1.25x4. It's a bit of both worlds.

You won't be disappointed I have the TR-24G and love it. I use it almost as often as my Eotech. Which reticle did you get?
