I thought about this some more. Can the laser potentially be set to illuminate only the center dot and not the circle? That would also improve battery life for those who really need it (I don't, at least not with cheap or rechargeable AA's).

You'd have to swap everything out, and even then the laser diode itself would still be running at the same output unless you turned the brightness down. In that image, the holographic grating is mounted to the windage/elevation adjustment mechanism.

I'm with the cause it works why fix it. There was some dude who bought a broke Eotech and added a variety different features that was pretty neat. He was on the Firearm blog with a while back. He added a few different reticles I believe.

Kind of. What he did was replace the hologram with an OLED display, could have done that with a counterfeit eotech as well. But it's no longer really an eotech at that point, because the display technology is different.
