My favorite scope for under $1000 is the Trijicon Accupoint:

The optical quality is excellent and the scope rivals scopes that cost much more.

      Excellent post Slo Chicken

Another option I'd suggest looking into would be the Burris XTR II scopes. Like the Weaver Tactical scopes, the Burris XTR II's seem to be a notch or two higher than comparable offerings from either Vortex or Bushnell.

I've bought night force 3.5-15x Mildots for 900 ish. I recently bought 5 new bushnell XRS 4.5-30x with h59. I'm not sure how much I like ret yet. I've seen a lot of hdmr 3.5-21 g2s for under 1k. The XTR2 is a excellent optic for 1k or less.

so maybe I can give you insight that may be helpful.

I have a trijicon, second focal plane 2.5-10x56mm. This is a low light scope I use on my 5.56 AR and use this for early morning or late evening 'yote hunting.

The glass is as good as any of the ones I will mention further on down, and the trijicon dot is really nice during the low light situations where you can lose your crosshairs in the dark brush when sighting a target.

Cons for this scope are the MIL/MOA dot/turret relationship. Confusing, and never could figure out why a company would do this - yet it seems, mfrs do it over and over. In my case, it isn't much matter as once I set the turrets (hunting turrets with covers) they don't really get messed with.

All in all a great scope and I am quite happy with it. Price - approx. $900

SWFA 3-9x42 FFP no parallax adjust, rear focus. Great solid scope, non-illuminated, but no problem there. Turrets are very repeatable and tactile clicks are great. Easy to count clicks and return to zero with this scope Cheaper than other options at about $550 or so if you can still find one (I think they only make the HD now, which is same glass, different reticle).

I also have a SWFA HD Mil/Mil in 1-4x which is also an excellent scope

SWFA are excellent scopes and a steal for their price.

I have 2 Weaver Tactical, which have been what I would recommend over the other choices.

I have a 3-15x50 mil/mil (illum)side parallax adjust rear focus on my 24" LR308 and it has been an excellent scope, glass on par with anything I own, and the illumination is helpful again, in low light situations. This rifle doesn't go hunting though (Pig weight of 13+lbs stays home)

I also have a Weaver tactical 4-20x50 (non illum) Mil-Mil side parallax adjust rear focus on a bolt rifle I have. Again, just a superb scope. I should mention that both the weavers have resettable zeros, and track perfectly if you are one that uses clicks to adjust elevation/windage vs. Kentucky windage/holdover. I do both, but reaching out with a 308 demands clicks or you run out of mil-dots ...

As this is the case, repeatable and defined, tactile turret function is paramount, right up there with quality glass.

Weaver offers all of this, and more for the money.

The weavers run about $600-$900 and worth every penny.

All said, it should be known that my favorite 300-400yd deer/elk rig is a single shot Ruger no. 1 with a basic duplex reticle Leupold vx2 3-9x on it and it puts the meat on the table every season.

I have a Leica and a pride-fowler that is new to me. Both are better scopes than the above options, but at close to twice to 3x the price, they aren't good enough that I notice with my aging eyes.

As for Nikon, Bushnell - no thanks, been there, done that. IMO they don't compare to the other options.

I bought a Vortex Viper HS in 2.5-10x44 with a duplex reticle. It is a nice scope but not at the quality level of any of the above ones I have mentioned.

I think to get a quality Vortex you will need to look at the PST or the Razor lineup.

          One last thing.

I see the Primary arms FFP 4-16 or whatever it is get mentioned from time to time. I saw one at Parallax tactical. The turrets were mush, couldn't hardly count clicks - for me that is a deal breaker.

I like Dimitri, and Primary Arms for that matter. Just a solid all-around vendor. But IMO, those scopes are not made to compete with scopes in the $500-$1000 range.

For my money, for your 308, I would look real hard at the 3-15 Weaver Tactical. I must say it is probably my favorite scope of any I mentioned. That includes my Leica and my Pride-Fowler

Have your seen the 4-14x ffp models?
