Best 308 scope under 1k? Battery and Non

Best scope for a 22" 308 that is under $1k?

Let's split them up by battery powered and non battery powered.

I'm thinking of a Nikon Prostaff 5, 3.5-14x50 illuminated for a yet to be acquired Mossberg MVP Patrol in 308.

Or maybe one of the non illuminated ones in either 40 or 50.

Looking forward to seeing what others think.

For what application? Target, Tactical, Hunting?

Are you looking for a close in (1-6x), mid range (2.5-10x), or long range (5-20x) type optic?

Vortex 2.5-10x32 FFP. 5/5 hits on a 10" plate at 1k with an OBR, 2.5 will work for anything in close. It depends if you need higher power glass to observe with. 10x is a great fit for a .308.

Ive had a SWFA on my .308 since 2005, and it still tracks perfectly during a box drill.

This would be for mixed use. I don't intend on less than 100yds but could add a rmr for those close distances.

I've been told that you should have 1x for every 100yds you want to engage. So a 8x scope would max out at 800yds or so.

                    The Nikon M-308

The Nikon M-308 4-16x42 is hard to beat in a bang for buck situation. It can be had for under its $800 MSRP and includes the mount. Nikon has a smart phone app to use with the BDC reticle

                      Pretty good advice.

I have the 40 on my SPS tac .308, it works great, I don't really shoot this gun past 500 yards though, mostly 100-300 yards. Not bad at all for a $200 scope.

SWFA SS 10x HD. That's a tank with a good feature set Mil/Mil.
SWFA 3-9x42. First Focal Plane and all you actually need by any measure. Mil/Mil

I'd agree with this if you can find the 5-20 FFP used. Mine was used but never mounted and LNIB when I got it for $1000 of Snipershide.

I also have the Vortex Viper PST 6-24 FFP and it is also great and can be found from some sellers for $750-$850 or so. The glass is better than I expected and I actually like the controls better than the SWFA.

Still, the SWFA glass is significantly better, at least in my opinion.

I recently bought and mounted a Primary Arms 4-14 FFP and am very impressed with both the glass and of course the reticle, which I love.

Is the glass as good as either the Vortex or SWFA? Not really, but it's awful close (which was a pleasent surprise) and it costs less than $300.
