AR-10 Scope Mount Height?

OK, dumb newbie question, but how much space do Y'all typically want between the scope and rifle, with an AR-10? I usually like my scope petty close to the rifle, but my Leupold 3-9 is now just a C-H away from my AR-10, using Medium-height mounts. I'd like a bit more space, but just hate going really high.

Is it OK for my scope to almost be touching the barrel?

Cycling the charging handle also feels a bit close for comfort with this setup...

Also, any pointers on good non-lead .308 rounds around 165/168 grn? Just found out, I may have to be in one of those areas... dang! Guess I also need some more range time first.

I like my Ultra high rings, or whatever the highest rings that Leupold makes, on my .308 AR, but I also have a magpul PRS stock and I adjusted the cheekpiece to my liking. Do whatever feels best for YOU

Thanks for that... trying to get her set up to kill some pork this weekend. Maybe I'll just try her as-is, but I'll be going from range to field on the same day.

Guess I'll keep the old Weatherby around as a backup.

After a lot of experimenting, I've settled on 30mm as the best height (Base to centerline) for rings on my AR rifles. This places the scope at just about the perfect height for my facial bone structure. Most peolple that have shot my rifles have also commented on how well aligned the scopes are, so I think that 30mm to 35mm is probably a good range for most shooters. When I had 25mm high rings on my AR-10, I found that they were just slightly too low. I had to jam my face down into the cheekrest, and ended up feeling like someone had punched me in that cheek after a day of shooting like that.

The center height you will need will be from 1.25” to 1.375”.

I recommend the GG&G Accucam but it is not for 1” tubes. Can get reduces to make work.

On ARs, the general goal is to have the scope centerline at about the same height as the iron sights. Some people (like me) like it a bit above the centerline height, while others like it a bit below.

On an AR15, the iron sight centerline is 1.4" (35.5 cm) above the rail, and most mounts are in the 1.3-1.5" range, with some higher and lower.

I believe an AR10 has a higher receiver rail than an AR15, but I don't know how much. If so, this would mean you'd need a lower mount, like CSGunWorks recommends. The Armalite mount is simple and sturdy, comes in both 1" and 30mm, and is a bit low for the AR15 at 1.25" centerline, but this may be good for an AR10.
