Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 Keep or take back

I was in Sportsmans Warehouse yesterday and walked by the gun counter. Big mistake!

I walked out with a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 (VPR-M-05MD) Mildot reticle for $279. Lowest price I saw on line was in the low 400's.

Worth it for $279 or take it back and move on.

I haven't decided what rifle it will go on. Could go on a .308 AR or maybe just a regular AR.

Good bang for the buck at $279? Still not worth it?

They also had a Burris Mtac 4.5x14x42 for $350 which caught my eye. The SKU on that doesn't match to SKUs on Burris' site so I am waiting to hear from Burris on that one.

Guess its not a popular scope.

Well do you want to target shoot, hunt, etc. With it.

Prob a hell of a good deal.

Full lifetime warranty on that scope, every thing I have read about those scopes has been good. How can you go wrong at that price?

It will get used for all of the above depending on what rifle it goes on. I don't have anything that is a dedicated target gun. Likely it will eventually end up on a hunt, most likely for varmints.

Vortex scopes are great and the warranty can't be beat.

i have the exact same scope and love it. it is on my .308 remmy rifle. great scope for the money. the viper is the mid line scope...great glass and clarity. move up to the next line and the glass is even more clear. i may sell mine and get another with more magnification...in the next line up. Vortex warranty cannot be beat. period.

I ran the 50mm model on my first long range gun while on a budget. Never had a problem; accurate turrets, dropped it a few times with no change in zero, decent glass, basic but very usable reticle, backed by Vortex warranty.

Thanks everyone. I guess I ought to get some new rings or a PEPR and get it mounted up.

I pick up the 4-16 Viper HST w/ the VMR1 MOA reticle @ Sportsman's a couple weeks back. Finding mounts for it was more difficult that deciding on the scope. Using it on a Ruger GSR w/ a full length rail. Had been using a EOTech HWS and was knocking down the steel critters fine, but my astigmatism made the dot a little 'blocky' @ 500M. With the parallax adjustment in addition to the rear focus, all is clear and sharp. The LaRue QD mounts repeat to zero on my 100 yd visual testing. Have fun. :-)

The only thing I don't like about the scope is its a MOA turret with a MIL reticle... life if just easier when its matching.

That said, I rather have the mil reticle over the Dead Hold BDC reticle.

Thanks for the feedback. Trying to decide what to put it on. Thinking an AR-10 would make a good choice.

Talked to Burris on the MTAC my SW has for $350. Same as the other MTAC just with the Ballistic Milling reticle. Kicking around the idea of buying it as it is a good deal for the MTAC. Not sure I like the reticle though.

The Vortex Viper line is OK but the Vortex Viper PST line is a lot better. The new Vortex Viper HST has been doing really well for the dollar value.
