Schmidt & Bender Short Dot vs. Elcan SpecterDR

    Schmidt & Bender Short Dot -- $2500.00
    Elcan SpecterDR -- $1832.95

Prices are approximate average from several vendors. Its going on an AR15. If I get the Schmidt & Bender Ill probably get the LaRue mounts.

    Any feedback from owners?

Oh yeah I wear glasses but not usually when I'm using magnification.

There have been a post or 2 about this.

This is gonna be a lite thread as very few people have experience with either scope. When I was putting my OLL I researched the SB SD, and every now and then I would run into someone talking about the Elcan. So I'll pass on what I have read.

Seems the SB gets all the praise, people who have/used it it love it. Is it all legit or also some part the justification of owning a SB? I don't know, but I have read many articles on it, and all state that it is the best at what it is.

The Elcan gets brought up every now and then, and the reports seem to be more mixed, with some loving it and other not so much, plus I have read of quality problems with the Elcan.

Like I said all 2nd hand info, but I am just passing it on.
I think it can be confirmed that an alien xenomorph is absolutely no match for good ole' Alabama black snake!

    and

If you're in a survival movie and the hot blond twists her ankle and can't walk, you damn well figure a way to carry her. If it's a dude, you shake his hand and say "best of luck".

A few around here have the Elcan - BWiese is one, he loves it. The QC problem is supposed to be resolved with the second release, the flip lever to go from 1x to 4x was an issue. Go over to Arf.com, tonnes of info on both.

From end user reports that I have read on lightfighter by people who have used and been issued them:

Short Dot: awesome scope but also awesomely expensive and awesomely heavy.

Elcan: Has a wide FOV, but it is a POS that won't hold zero when it gets knocked around, has a big fat knob at the 9 o'clock position blocking your FOV, ARMS levers break, and also heavy as hell.

How about the U.S. Optics SN4 or their SN4S which starts out at $1100. It's Californian made and custom order too :-D. I just picked up my ST-10 from them and wow, it's amazing :-P.

Very nice scope - Weighs a ton too though!

It also isn't designed as a heads-up scope (bright day visible dot).

I have SpectreDR. It's the best so far I've seen. I have it on my Sig556. That being said, I did not hold the smidt scope in my hands so I won't say anything about it.

                        None of the above.

I would go for Nightforce NXS 1 or 2.5x with Zero Stop.

                        or

                        Trijicon TA31ecos

They will save you some bucks also.

p.s. Trijicon and NF offer excellent customer services. Elcan? Well, they are in Canada and I don't know.

The NXS illuminated reticle cannot be seen in daylight...FYI

The problem I have with that particular ACOG is eye relief, I feel like I have to stick my eye right against the scope to get a good FOV.
