    Optics help for AR15

I'm a newbie to the forum. Raised with hunting/guns, but haven't owned one in 25 years. Just purchased a Del-Ton Sport AR15 5.56 (Optics Ready, meaning no optics).

So, I need some metal sites. Any recommendations? Metal is my preference and have seen Troy and Magpul suggested. I'll be shooting at the local gun range and eventually at an outdoor range with, I guess, targets at long distances (300 yards?). I don't know because I'm a newbie.

At what ranges is the the red dot / parallax sites accurate? Any recommendations for those? Does it really cost $500 for good quality?

    thanks for your help.

The Daniel Defense fixed rear sight is a very high quality piece for not nearly as much as a Troy flip-up.

      Congrats! Welcome!

You can buy "fixed" or "flip-up" style, or 45deg "rapid transition" iron sights. The good stuff is Troy, YHM, MI (Midwest Industries), GG&G, A.R.M.S., Magpul non-poly.

I've shot out to 300-400 effectively with my EOTech Holographic. I'm sure Aimpoint Red Dots are every bit as good. Yup, quality optics can be expensive but they work.

Here's what I think might be a good entry level optic for your gun:

Primary Arms 1-6X Scope with ACSS Reticle "Advanced Combined Sighting System"

I'm actually waiting for their 7.62x39 version of this scope for my AK. If you don't like that, Primary Arms has plenty others to choose from for less than $500

Laws against murder and attempted murder should have been the only gun control laws ever needed in America...

If you're interested in fixed iron sights, look into Daniel Defense.

I'd go for a decent red dot sight to start with. Plenty of decent ones for way less than 500$, and easier to use then irons.

Newbie or advanced shooter the abilities of the 1-6 ACSS system are undeniable.

You can use it as a red dot upclose and scope further out.

If you have a front sight post, you could always get a carry handle for the classic look.

Sorry for the delayed response - thought I got back to this already. I am reviewing some of these options and really appreciate the feedback. Maybe there will be some super deals over the holidays.

Palmetto state armory makes some awesome flip up BUIS. They are even on sale right now. They are a great quality for the price. . I bought a pair for my AR with the intent to purchase something more expensive in the future after I do some research. I really like them. They were easy to sight in and I can shoot pretty accurately with them.

I'm in the market for folding irons as well. Currently stuck on having to decide between Troy with tritium, Samson with tritium, but I think the ARMS are the most appealing to me, just need tritium upgrades :P I really love the night sights on my 1911 so I would love them on my AR.

As for red dots, yes the EOTechs and Aimpoints are worth the money. The Primary Arms 1-6x looks great for the price though, can use up close and farther out as stated.

I would skip Tritium for your backup sights.

My new M&P AR came with flip up Magpul iron sites and I added a Aimpoint Pro which I still have to dial in at the range. I love love love my setup for looks and accuracy.

Primary Arms makes some excellent scopes/dots for the money. My friend has had a micro ($89.00)on his 3 gun shotgun for 1 1/2 years and its has been through mud, dirt, rain, dust, and sand without loosing zero or fogging.

The main difference between a PA and a $500 red dot is the $500 Aimpoints are Military grade optics which can take a brutal beating, it can be submerged, and its battery life is 4-5 years left on. The PA Micro has a 1000 hr battery life, and is almost as bright.

If your kicking in doors for a living get an Aimpoint.
For classes, matches, range use a PA will do fine.

IMHO A red dot for 0-200 meters is fine on 18" wide targets any further/smaller you may want a magnified optic.
