I just put a HDMR on a recent 308 project and while it has not taken a beating, the scope appears to be solid. To the OP, what type of "testing" do you plan on utilizing in the field. The scope debate runs in-line with the rifle debate as to what model is better than the other and many selections will simply come down to personal preference. Beware of the many "I heard, or I read" type of responses that seem to grow in magnitude as they are transferred from one to another. Any of the scopes mentioned so far would be a good scope and should perform up to a reasonable standard...whatever that particular standard may be is up to you. Now the question is, do you want to spend 3k on a scope and beat it into submission just to see how tough it is? There are some manufactures that are scaling back their lifetime warranties for just this reason as some owners are thrashing their scopes on purpose and then expect to send them in for a new optic.

USO and S&B = better glass. My USO 10x went back to the factory twice. Customer service was great and service was fast and problem-free. I like the USO turret design the best. I have had no problems with the one S&B I own and I consider it the finest scope I own.

NF = decent glass, accurate clicks, and built like a tank - but very heavy for the size. I have 6 of them and have had no quality issues. My 16-year old son lost the set screw for the zero-stop clutch on his 2.5-10, I called NF and received another one in the mail a week later - no charge. I have a 5.5-22x56 NSX on my .50, and it has held up great. My next scope will be a BEAST with the MOAR reticle.

I know the USO and S&B fan boys hate Nightforce, but NF makes a pretty damn good product at half the price.

      NF has proven itself in the field IMO;

Rob Furlong. 50-cal world record sniper kill at 2,657 yards. 5.5-22x56 NSX.

Chris Kyle, "America's deadliest sniper". 160 confirmed kills to 2,100 yards using 5.5x22 NSX.

Matt Kline. 1000 yard target shooting world record holder. 10-shot group at 1000 yards measuring 2.81" using a 8-32x56.

I was at a Soldier of Fortune convention gun show. I heard loud banging. It was a guy literally hammering nails into a wood block with a U.S. Optics scope. Obviously I couldn't mount it on a rifle and shoot it, but the image and reticle looked fine. This was almost 20 years ago and I had never heard of U.S. Optics until then.

Nightforce is the most popular scope in 1000 yard benchrest shooting by a substantial amount.

I swear by nightforce. They f'ing rock. Tough, you can bang them around and they are rock solid. The glass is awesome. There's a near new one 5.5-22x50 for $1375 on Snipershide right now.

I'm not sure that is an important selling point for me, most of the other guys on the shooting line aim downrange, well that's the idea anyway.

Thanx Lynn, I'm familiar with March and I own a Nightforce. The Nightforce is cartoon like huge on my 6mmBR. Definitely not a LV class gun. I only have two long range guns believe it or not, if you don't count my NRA highpower rifles. My other guns have mostly custom Leupolds.

Which long range scopes can take the most beating?

IMHO, The most durable would be the Nightforce or US optics. I have had a bunch of high end scopes in my lifetime.

In the last 7 or 8 years the stand outs as far as durability are the USO and NF. By a wide margin.

That info isn't from reading about scopes on the Interwebs. Thats real deal beating the crappola outa the optic.

In my mind. I would take the USO. As it can also be used as a hammer as well as a scope. It's heavy, great glass, and relatively indestructible. And their customer service is relatively good these days. Slow. But good.

NOTE: I am not a neutral party. I know the owner of USO and the GM at NF.

Get what you can afford. Get a good warranty. If after a time you don't like what you bought. Sell it. Try something else.

Scopes aren't a once in a lifetime buy of you like to shoot a bunch. You can swap scopes with your friends. Buy em... sell em. And learn a bunch in the process.

Now please.. Go have some fun and beat on your new glass. I do dam near every week.

                            Cheers.

                            -T

                                What no Leupold Mark 4s?
Oh wait. They have fixed mine though after they fell apart internally with just normal hunting abuse, not military.
I would like to use a NF for awhile after my research and when money allows.
