Pretty new to AR15's, almost done with first build which has standard Magpul Gen 2 iron sights. Asking for advice on whether to purchase a reflex sight or scope and what the basic differences are between the two and which you'd use for shots between 100 - 300 yards out. Thanks much.

A red dot doesn't have eye relief and exit pupil to deal with. It's downside is obviously the lack of magnification and reliance on power(some red dots last far longer than others on batteries, but you also have to consider differences in reticle and controls). However, you can shoot a red dot out to 500 yards(hell, I think the Marines train with irons out to 500).
A scope shouldn't need to be illuminated in broad daylight 9 times out of 10, and you gain magnification at the loss of field of view. -
We have Elcan Specter DR 1-4' , EO Tech EXPS3-0 and the ACOG TA31H. Mostly shooting 50-100yds to sometimes out to 200yds. Initially thought the Elcan would cover the dual role of CQB and pushing out beyond. The optic is absolutely superb, unbelievable glass clarity and overall functionality, but very heavy. EO Tech....fantastic for CQB. Over all hands down best optic(IMO of course) is the ACOG. It lives up to everything you hear about them. Worth every penny, cry once....buy once, It will not disappoint.Comment

If your application is really 100-300 yards with minimal close in shooting or reflex shooting personally I would rule out a reflex optic pretty quick.
After going through a respectable amount of optics on the AR platform I always find myself coming back to low powder variables. I still own RDS units and an ACOG, but the versatility of a nice 1-4 or 1-6x optic just fits they type of shooting I do a lot better.
With the large selection of 1-4x optics on the market, should be easy to find something in your price range, with a reticle options which would meet your needs.ExtremeXComment

I would go with the 1-4x scope. I can personally recommend the Burris MTAC and Leupold Mark AR with fire dot. They are both around $400 + shipping. The Burris has a bigger eye box and a pretty close true 1x. You can shoot with both eyes open at 1x and be just as quick as a red dot / reflex sight. The Leupold is brighter and almost half the weight as the MTAC but the lowest magnification is 1.5x. You can still shoot quickly with both eyes open but it's not as strong as the Burris in that aspect.Comment

i heartily recommend the trijicon 1-4x. as fast as my aimpoint for close stuff, but waaay better for the stuff beyond 150yds. i enjoy shooting with the low powered scope more than the red dot, but i do like having both. aimpoints on my SHTF rifles, magnified optics on my "reach-out-and-touch-someone" rifles.
downside for the magnified optics? my lightweight rifle isnt so lightweight anymore...Comment

The leupold vx-r patrol has outstanding glass. Though not a true 1x if you shoot with both eyes opemed its not a problem. The biggest problem with any magnified optic true 1x or not is its very hard to pick up the reticule in non traditional shooting position. This is where the vxr patrol with the fire dot shines since its parallax free just point the dot at what you want to hit and pull the trigger. Also if a 1.25x bothers you just turn on the dot and close the front lens cover. There are a lot of reviews saying the vxr patrols dot isnt day light visable or is to dim. I can personally tell you those claims are faulse. The biggest down fall of the patrol is the non locking turrets especially on a dedicated cqb rig. For a spr or dmr rifle that may play a cqb roll if you had to it will do just fine. Targets out to 100- 500m is where this scope will shine. I second this. I really like my Trijicon TR24R and NO BATTERIES. I also like my SWFA 1-4X with a First Focal Plane reticle that gives you a more precise reticle pattern for distance shots and has better glass, but the eye box is a little less forgiving.
For RDS, get an Aimpoint PRO or T1. OR my favorite the Trijicon SRS with a 1.75 moa dot and HUGE field of view.
If you want an excellent budget RDS get the Primary Arms MD06, super RDS for around $100.
