I didnt mean for close range, I am talking optic selection in general. For my specific use I am looking for long distance. I was thinking that 3-9x was still a little weak though. I like the analogy by the way. Very well said.

Funny, I was researching both scopes last night and I went with Leupold. Made in USA, lighter than the Vortex and I like the motion sensor the Leupold has.

You mean "mostly made in USA". Take a closer look. Assembled and made are two different things. The glass on the vx is no more american than the pst. Also, after trying both i couldn't stand how thick the reticle lines on the patrol were. At 100yds they covered an inch of target and the fire dot seemed irritating at best for mid range. The marks are also extremely coarse which renders them near useless from what a lot of reviewers said. For close up the fire dot is great! But again, not a true 1x. Both eyes open for close and not being 1x can play games with your eyes. The motion sensor is a cool feature I guess. Something else that can break though. I wanted to like it as I love RDS and I love more traditional crosshairs. I thought it was going to be perfect. It was, just not perfect for me.

Don't get me wrong, Leupold is obviously a proven optics manufacturer and has been doing so before I even knew what a rifle was. I have to argument to say they are a subpar company by any means as they are great. They are certainly proven and are among he highest quality. I just don't feel that they are as strong in the 1-4 category based on my personal testing, my personal preference and reviews by the general public. There will undoubtedly be fanboys for either camp and in the end it is up to the buyer to decide what they like. For me it happened to be finer hashes, true 1x, better (yes I said it) warranty, less cluttered view and well... looks too.

My choice is Vortex. Great optics. Vortex Razor HD Rifle Scope is completely fog proof and waterproof. I am also looking for Vortex Viper PST 6-24 x 50 FFP.

Like Manpants said... there is a misbelief that Leupold means "Made in the USA". Matter of fact, even with scopes "Made in the USA"... it often just means, "Assembled in the USA".

Anyhow, having said that... between the two scopes you listed, the Vortex is vastly better.

Leupold does however make a better low zoom scope, two of them actually... but the price of those might shock you. :P
