I agree. I just mounted one on my x-bolt using the tally 4 hole mounts and rings. I bought the scope and ring/mount set for $345 del from optics planet. The shipment was fast and perfect. Ask them for a package discount. Nice scope in a good price range.

I have yet to shoot a deer, moose or bear with the magnification greater then the lowest setting. My varmint rifles however wear VX-3 4.5-14x40's with the exception of my AR which wears a 2-7x32 VX-R. Why the 40mm objective? Weight and when busting brush the smaller objective doesn't get hung up. I haven't any problem using the scopes mentioned for shooting targets and even the 2-7x32 I use out to 300 yards with no problem.

Remember you really get what you pay for when it comes to scopes. It is not only the quality of the glass but the precision of the internal parts and If the scope won't shoot the box then it's not worth much.

I'm a fan of these. http://www.burrisoptics.com/fullfielde1.html Cheap reliable, good glass, awesome warranty. but Vortex, Nikon, and Redfield all have great scopes under $500.

I had a Fullfield E1 3-9x40 on my heavy barrel AR15 and my 11yo son was hitting metal plates from 400, 500 and 600 yds with it, 2 shots - 2 hits per plate no misses. And, it was his 1st time on the rifle too....

I just ordered an illuminated E1 this time for my 223 Rem 700 Tactical SPS.

Very great scope for the money. Very clear glass.
Definitely comparable to scopes that cost 2-3x as much

i actually just picked up a remington 700 a few weeks back. and ended up putting on a leupold 3-9x40. in my opinion its a great scope to start off with. depending on where you go, itll run you about 250-300$ but you get what you pay for ( i mean that in a good way ) i use it for long range target shooting as well as hunting and have had no issues at all. plus once its dialed in correctly? youll have no problem taking coyote at 300-400 yards.

If I may comment the above comments are great advice and the budget you mention of $500 will give you a scope that you should never have to replace or upgrade. Leupold makes quality product and will last a lifetime. Where you see the difference in optics is not only down range and around the edges of the scope in daylight but early in the morning and evening. This is where quality optics stand out and pay for themselves as well as in inclement weather.
Vixen Sports Optics makes a 2-8X32 as well as a 3-12X40 (note all are at least 4X magnification) for well under $400 that will be some of the brightest clearest optics as brands hundreds of $ more and all are made in Japan to the strictest of quality control.

TPierce----"Scope to start off with"........ I must be missing something.
I have been using the Varri-X II 3X9X40 scopes on my hunting rifles since the early 1970's and still use them. I have about 20 of them plus a few Vari-XIII's.
They have and continue to serve me well. I have used them in all weather conditions, for many yeats and in several states as well as Africa. They have never let me down in any way.

I say buy the Leupold II or better and you can consider yourself set for life and even for handing them down to your children. I will grant you that I really like the III models but they cost more than I usually want to pay even used off E-bay.

This is not a put-down of you TPierce. I just think the II models are just fine for long term use. They have been for myself and others I know.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Spend the money on a quality scope like a Nikon Monarch, Bushnell Elite, Weaver Super Slam, or Leopold VX-2 or VX-3. This link will help you compare.

Sholling is correct to spend the money now and save later. You don't need to spend more than you can afford however. Good quality optics are what you see the target with.

I know we are the new guy on the street so need to be the squeaky wheel. Below is a link to Vixen's 3-12X40 which is all the scope you will ever need for any caliber in a 700. The color resolution, clarity and light gathering abilities phenomenal.

I'm very interested in your band - and from internet research, realize you have very good reputation in telescope world... I'm sure the rifle scope glass is equally as good...

I look forward to a FFP scope with your current quality and great pricing... I will definitely buy one then

What rings would you use with a VX-2?

I put a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 on my Remy 700 and with the BDC reticle it works really really well for hunting and I find acceptable on the range as well. Lot less than $500, spend the rest on ammo.

I run a Nikon monarch 4-16x42 mildot on my 700. I got it under $400 new and it is an excellent scope for the price.
