Good starter scope for Remington 700

Looking to buy a Remington 700 .308 win here in the near future. What do you guys recommend as a good scope to start with, looking for a scope under 500 and definitely want something that will last until I can drop some money on a scope that will last me for a long time.

Going to be doing target shooting at first but eventually hunting.

Terrible suggestion for any hunting except ground squirrels.

What's your budget? Depending on how much you may not need to buy another scope.

Leupold fixed 4 or 6 will do fine.

Leupold VX-2 gets pretty good reviews. The VX-3 is supposed to be better but for my budget ($300/400) the VX-2 fits

Leupold 3X9X40 or 3.5X10X40 with du-plex reticle and you will set for life. You can target shoot and the best one for hunting.

Perfect choices for both hunting or target shooting. I see a lot of people mounting to powerful a scope on a hunting rifle. I hunt and the majority of deer I have taken has been within 100 yards one as close as 20 feet. I have an addiction to Leupold and I mount the VX-2 3-9x40 or VX-3 3.5-10x40 on my big game rifles. I have yet to shoot a deer, moose or bear with the magnification greater then the lowest setting. My varmint rifles however wear VX-3 4.5-14x40's with the exception of my AR which wears a 2-7x32 VX-R. Why the 40mm objective? Weight and when busting brush the smaller objective doesn't get hung up. I haven't any problem using the scopes mentioned for shooting targets and even the 2-7x32 I use out to 300 yards with no problem.

Remember you really get what you pay for when it comes to scopes. It is not only the quality of the glass but the precision of the internal parts and If the scope won't shoot the box then it's not worth much.

I have personally visually verified Mil spacing and tracking. Its good to go!
There a lot of reviews out on it.

Looks sweet! FFP reticle scaling is nice!
