The shielded one looks like it would give less glare in a daylight shooting environment, but I honestly can't say I've used either. I have heard great things about the Primary Arms Micro Dot. 79.99 and it was in stock yesterday. My AR is 7.62x39, so that if/when we get invaded, I can shoot their ammo back at them!

You're right on. Two reasons for the design. One being that the extended walls as as a shade so you will pick up the reticle better in bright conditions. second is to be a blend of tube style and open style. their feeling was an extended housing makes for a more durable sight that is still classified as an 'open' sight.
