That's what Im looking at getting in green mildot. If you don't mind me asking how much was the whole set up? Is the Larue that good of a mount where its worth the money?Once an Eagle

I'm thinking of a similar set up for the SCAR17, but I wonder if a 56" objective is too big. Also, I prefer the Bobro mounts to Larue.. cleaner looking and rock solid.NRA Lifetime Member

Glenn, firstly Vortex has won me over making an affordable, yet excellent product with a bulletproof warranty behind it.
Regarding the standard crosshair vs a mil-dot; I personally believe there is no current reason to not go with a mil dot and eventually over 90% of scope will utilize a mil dot type of reticle. A mil-dot IMO is an extremely useful thing to have, even if you do not plan to use it to its potential. You can read range with it, read height of target with it, read speed of target with it, use the dot for hold over points, and use the dots as a measuring tool for how much adjustment you need to make. They are not all the same and some are certainly better than others. Even if you don't plan on using it, it is something to grow into. They aren't quite as good if you are shooting 2nd FFP though.
Ring height will depend on your scope. Generally you want it as low as can be provided the front of the scope doesn't touch your barrel, but you also don't want it so low that it is uncomfortable. We have to know the actual scope dimensions first. Additionally, pay attention to ring height. Some companies measure from the center of the ring to the base of the mount and others measure from the bottom of the ring to the base of the mount. So low/medium/high to one company may not be the same for another.
Provided your eyes are good, you should be able to see the target and shoot 400 yards with irons. An Aimpoint can certainly do it, although the dot probably pretty much covers your target (depending on what your shooting at I suppose). Again, I recommend Vortex.Comment
