Thanks for the input/validation so far. So, between a 3-9x40mm and a 4-12x50mm, you think a 3-9x40mm would be fine for the ranges that I specified above? I'm hoping so, as I want to keep the size/weight down.

Yes, you will find having 3x at the low end handier for close in and 9x is plenty for the ranges you will be shooting at.

By "low power," I assume you mean something like a 1x or 2x fixed power scope? What is the rationale for going with such a low magnification given the intended use that I described? (I'm here to learn, so some details may help me understand better why this would be a good choice.)

You will be best served for hunting with a 3-9x or the 4-12x rather than a LPV (Low Powered Variable) like a 1-4 or 2-7x. The 3x end will work fine for under 100 yards and the 9x end will get you out to 350-400 yards just fine.

IMHO, a 4-12x is just a bit over-powered for this task on an AR, but if you shoot at 400+ much then it will help you with target detail.

Just bought vxii 4-12 Leupold for my old HBAR . I've shot hundreds of squirrels with this gun useing 3-9's & 6-20's as the day got warm I turned the scope down to around 12 to escape the mirage, 9 wasn't enough for them over 100yrds. The old hunting scopes were fixed 4's for running big game. I avoid exposed adjustment knobs because I missed a shot with 3 squirrels end to end when my jacket brushed my elevation knob & I shot over them! Damn no bragging rights there LOL.
