    Questions about EOtec 512

I have been looking at the EOtec 512 optic for an AK platform. I felt it was an excellent "intro" optic, however I have been seeing a really high number of them for sale used on this forum. Should that be a warning flag for me? What are the downsides that you guys have seen with this optic?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

Eotec are top notch optics very durable and the 512 takes AA batteries and that's a huge plus. We offer 3x magnifier with ours.

Discover EOTech's legendary holographic weapon sights trusted by military and law enforcement. Features true holographic reticles, instant target acquisition, fog-resistant performance, and 30 years of proven reliability.

I had an Eotech and sold it, but only to get an ACOG. It's the best CQB optic, IMO. Much more friendly to look through vs an Aimpoint. Super nice wide field of view, unlimited paralax, etc. Maybe a close 2nd place optic is the Trijicon Reflex.

I just liked having distance ability along with CQB with the ACOG, but if I was just doing close up shooting, I would have definitely kept the Eotech.

You may want to look through one first to see if your eyes will have a problem seeing a clear dot/circle. People with astigmatism have a really hard time using Eotechs and many red dot sights due to astigmatism. Just keep that in mind.

Some earlier eotechs were notorious for battery contact issues.

I have 2. They are awesome. One sits on my Beowulf. Had my old one (2005 model) upgraded to the latest electronic by Eotech for $79. Can't beat that.

Is this what you had in mind? It works very well...

I also highly recommend the Hogue grip. So much more comfortable than hanging on to that hard piece of wood...

I wouldn't recommend the EOtech on an AK. You don't get a proper cheek weld and it doesn't allow for any iron sight Co witness.

If the above are important to you, id recommend an Aimpoint on an,MI rail, or a commie optic like the PO3.5x21 or rukars.

Unfortunately, my AKS did not come with a side scope mount...so I'm doing my best with what I've got.

i prefer the 123 battery versions due to higher brightness levels, but they are great. i would take a look at the new trijicon red dot though, looks cool and tons of FOV.

I put one on my wife's AR instead of the carry-handle sight and she loves the thing. I find it kind of fun myself and my teenage son really digs it too. As far as I can tell, ain't nothing wrong with them. My AR just happens to be an old-school Colt (well, everything but the lower) that doesn't have a detachable carry-handle or I'd probably put one on it too.

I've had a 512 on my Bush M1A for years with zero trouble and its good to at least 300 yards (Longest range available to me)
Just ordered another in fact. I like being able to use AA batteries-They're much easier to find at 7-11

                        The 512 is rock solid

The 512 is my least favorite model…

I much prefer any of the CR123 models. Smaller, lighter, more capacity, better cold weather performance, batteries don’t leak, and CR123 hold a charge in storage for a lot longer than AA batteries.

My preference is due to battery type rather than the unit, I am a huge CR123 fan. It’s such a common cell I don’t find availability to be an issue, and the shelf life is so long you should not have a fear of stocking them. Plus some of the best flashlights available use the same cell.
