I would go with a 1-4x scope for an AR.

Vortex PST 1-4x is what I use right now, and you can find some options in the $300 price range.

if you are shooting at a distance distance of 50-100 yards you may want to think about a red dot sight but if you want some magnification look into this LEUPOLD Mark AR 1.5-4x20mm Matte Duplex. It is a quality optic for under 300$

At that price range take a close look at the Nikon M223 or the Vortex Viper line.
