Have you considered maybe a fixed power? 12x, maybe 20 or 25. Old Leupold or Weaver target scope. Maybe an SWFA Super Sniper. You could probably pick one of those up for 3 hundred bucks or so. People really seem to love those.

I have a 10x fixed SWFA on my Remington and can see and hit IPSC sized shilouette steel at 1,000 yards without too much trouble.

Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

The classic 10X SWFA is a great option for @ 250. Their Gen2 3-15 FFP Mil or MOA Christmas tree reticle, high, low and capped turrets goes on sale for 599.00 on holidays/BF/etc. While higher magnification is assumed to be better by some the glass clarity is where it's at. Most PRS/precision shooters prefer to have a balance of clarity and field of view which generally is @ 12-15X. For me I usually use the lowest magnification where I can read the stadia lines the clearest. For a 1K budget a used Leopold HD5, Gen 2/3 Vortex Razor, NF NX8 would be my choice. Generally the same scope with a 3-15 will have better glass vs a 5-25, so choosing the higher mag may not be as beneficial. One of the reasons the SWFA 10X out sells the 12,15 or even their 20X scopes that cost all about the same is due to the better glass. The 10X is extremely capable at 1K and beyond and if you have the chance to view a "fixed" mag 10X vs a 15X at 1-1.5K yards you may be surprised at the results.

Plus, it tracks well and is reliably repeatable. Mine is older so no zero stop, otherwise it does the job.

You can buy Zero Stop spacers on ebay that will give you a kinda zero stop. Mine goes .4 mils under zero. IMHO they are necessary for multiple fast engagements or when you're using a laser range finder mounted on your scope. A capped windage cap is also a nice to have.

Thanks for the tip. I ended up going to the local hardware store and buying a few different nylon washers, and that did the trick.
