What size dot on carry pistol?

I saw a red dot on sale at a really good price. Then I saw it was 3 moa. Is that too small for a carry dot? Maybe that's why it's so cheap.

I prefer a larger dot, especially for a carry gun. I will take a 5 over a 3 moa for my needs.

I like a 6moa dot, although I've changed to a dot-circle on my carry pistol. 3moa is hard for me to pick up. Have one on a Buckmark, and will soon switch it out for a 6moa dot sight, a holosun 407k

Go big, 6 moa or circle dot. The key with using a large dot is to zero your gun so the point of impact is at the 12 o'clock position of the dot, not the center. It's the same idea as zeroing at the top of the front sight post so you can see half the target.

I don't find a larger dot (5-6 moa) to be any quicker or easier to see than a smaller one (2-3 moa). I prefer smaller dot for the most part and usually only go with the bigger dot if it's on sale and I intend on putting it on a smaller gun like a subcompact or micro.

Do you do any running and gunning? There's a reason why most run large dots.

Standings at a square range shooting a target, it doesn't matter.

Yes I do. It has not made a difference.

When running and gunning in competition, I shoot far faster with a bigger dot. It's faster to acquire. I have a Leupold DPP with an 8 MOA triangle that I love. For some odd reason they discontinued that reticle. Holosun and others have a 32 MOA selectable outer ring which is also helpful for many that shoot fast on the move. Some find that 32 is too big though because they think it clutters up the sight picture.

If you have a smaller 2 to 3 MOA dot and decide to start running and gunning, simply crank the illumination up and the dot flare makes it look much bigger.

It's all personal preference and finding out what works for you. What works for others may not work for you.

You can make a 3moa dot bigger with the + brightness button, you can't make a 6moa dot smaller by dimming it.

Circle only. Good out to about 100 yards

What about concealment to first shot times? What are you looking at between the two on a timer?

It's been awhile but I think it was like 0.18 or so for either size dot for shot to shot and from concealment I'll have to drag out my notes. Regardless, I did not find a meaningful difference when using different dot sizes, this included testing with Holosun's mulitple reticle options if we're talking pure speed.

I am a tad faster with circle only and shoot it fine on a headbox to 25 and a zone at 50 (with a few c zone hits)

I find I am def a tad slower on 2 ans 6 moa
