Heard a lot of good things about the ACOG too but is definitely out of my price range. But it would be nice to have a sight that doesnt need batteries (Has its own tritium illumination source?).

Eotech vs Aimpoints

I have the Eotech 552 and love it. I recently bought an Aimpoint Comp M4 to put on my soon to be M1A. I'll mount the Aimpoint on my AR and see if there's a difference. I'm also planning on getting the magnifier for the Aimpoint. Should be a SWEET rifle once I'm done with it!!!Comment

ACOG's do indeed have tritium illumination, but you only notice it if you are shooting in low light.
In bright sunlight, you will not have an illuminated reticle unless you have one of the models with dual illumination (fiber optic light pipe on top).Randall Rausch

Well, that isn't what you asked before.
Based on what do you consider the aimpoint better?
This is why I like the EOTech... For fast close-in stuff you would concentrate on using the circle and bracketing your shots. For distance, it has a 1MOA dot, which has its advantages over Aimpoint (though they're now mostly 2MOA dots).
For most applications, the EOTech reticle wins. If you put on a magnifier, add in the 557's and now you have BDC, too.

not what i asked for? last i checked it was an EOtech aimpoint thread....I would think that being a more traditional "scope like" type sight would have its advantages when shooting at that distance. just like it being a disadvantage in cqbLast edited by scfast; 02-03-2008, 3:58 PM.sigpicComment

I was trying to highlight neither is the right tool for that task.
The red dots really excel at the point blank to 100 yds. I'd be happier with an ACOG for engaging targets at 50-400 yds.
The feature that makes a red dot better at distance is a smaller dot for better precision, or alternatively having BDC (like the 557). The Aimpoint loses on both counts.

From 100-500 yard range, the S&B Short Dot is the best damned thing I've ever tried. Too bad it cost about 4 ACOGs and about 5-7 Aimpoints or Eotechs.NRA Benefactor Life Member

I vote for the Aimpoint just because I've read about so many EOtechs failing. There are quite a few threads on ARF and here as wellComment
